Thread: What tikka to purchase

Hi all I have just got my firearms license and am planing on buying a tikka t3x my original plane was to get a new one chambered in .308 but I have been told that second hand is a good option. The main calibres that are sold of trade me seem to be 223/6.5crd/270/7mm 08 I will be hunting pretty much anything that I can from wallaby to reds what is the general consensus?

All will do what you want. 223 is a great caliber but more limited, but ammo is cheap. 308 is probably the best all round caliber on the planet. They would be my first choices. If you want a cheap varmint gun capable of taking deer and pigs then 223 if you want a deer rifle that youll occasionally bust some wallabies with then go the 308. My 2.cents.

Depends on the price. There are bargains to be had but they get snatched up quick if theyre good value. Both calibers mentioned are capable of shooting big numbers before barrel wear is a concern.

If you can’t find any tikka 308 second hand , then buy new. You won’t regret it.

Go .308. Secondhand prices are often close to new prices, so it's a judgement call based on your finances and condition of the rifle.

I only use a tika 308,if you want to shoot roos have a couple of pkts of 140gr FMJs keeped aside,cheap as.

I dont know anybody who does not like their tikka. They are great rifles.

Second hand ones often come at a "close to new" price point and you dont know what they did to it. The people I know would never sell their tikkas...

308 is the way to go, although there are "better" calibres out there, but it makes hardly any difference for the average shooter, and it is the most common. Which is good for ammo availability. In any case I would always go for a cartridge that is common.

buy brand new , they are generally not much more expensive and the big advantage is you have warranty so if your the unluckiest person on the plant and get a dog something can be done about it .

A .308 would be an awesome all-rounder. Add a suppressor and remove a few inches from the barrel. Get some Talley lightweight rings and the best scope you can afford. You'll hunt anything from wallaby/deer/tahr. I prefer new myself as I like to look after my gear and know its history that way. I'm sure there are some great secondhand rifles out there if you're lucky and quick enough to grab one.

Cut no shorter than 20 inch -18inchs,18 deer didnt like my 308 out to 400yds last summer.Hornady Superformance 150gr,165gr SSTs puts them down in the longer range.WhiteTail 165gr sp better in the shorter range at $65pkt for Wtail,not a bad price.
