White latte drinker wants new rifle - Sauer or Tikka?

Was having this discussion with a friend last night who is looking for a new hunting rifle. He has come from a Howa
now he was thinking about a tikka because they are popular, I suggested a new Sauer 100xt Cerakoted, both rifles are pretty similar I think but tikkas are so common so I thought something different would be cool for a change. Anyway, now he cant decide so i thought I would try get some other opinions for him - he has a budget of about 2K for rifle + scope.

Are there any obvious flaws or differences between the two - I get this is a flogged subject but when you havent a lot of cash you want to do it right, plus it's fun to talk about and get everyones opinions.

I wont get started on caliber yet haha because that comes next, but he was thinking 6.5x55, .260 or something similar, to be suppressed eventually (previously he was using 7mm08).

The brands or calibres won't do anything his current set-up won't do. If he doesn't have much money, save it and spend it on hunting trips.

Tikka still hard to beat. I like the sauer in the wood stock as well as sabatti rover and the newish bergara bolt rifle.
Better ammo selection in 308 if not reloading.

Stug is right. Much better off going hunting more than getting another rifle.

Howa's shoot well, in fact you pay allot more for the same gun when its sold under the wetherby brand, unless he is finding the 7-08 underpowered then no need to change

I have one of each and if I was buying another I would buy the Sauer

Since he's a latte drinker he must go with the Tikka. He must get 7-08, anything else and he can no longer drink latte's.
He'd be better off following Stug's advice and sticking with the Howa, if it ain't broke......

but being a latte drinker the ammo must be hand packaged in individual louis voutton italian leather bags.

Sorry i should have clarified! He no longer has the HOWA, he has been out of the game for a year or two but is a reasonably experienced hunter. So currently no gun but 2k.

Maybe he will have to start drinking flat whites, or dear i say it...black.

Tikka .260 (do they do a .260?) then, re-sale will be better than a Sauer.

Keep an eye out for second hand deals man. Plenty going on here. That way he can buy better glass.

The Sauer seems a nice rifle. Tikkas are hard to beat for value and aftermarket support though. My only real gripe with the tikka is having to drop the mag to top it off. Not an issue in big country but a bit of a pain in the bush

With the tikkas the mag sticks down also, while the Sauer are flush i think which would probably also be better in the bush?
Do people still have problems with losing the bolt out of tikkas?

mag capacity

I have a Tikka in 260 and would certainly buy another.
Good thing about the Tikka is there are lots of after market options when it comes to stocks etc

Saying that, I wouldn't recommend 260 unless he reloads as 260 ammo can be a bit hard to find and very expensive when you do find it.
On the contrary 6.5x55 is very common.

I have held both rifles, I prefer the feel of the tikka in hand. Personally, I felt the Sauer wasn't as nice in hand and the stock was a bit 'cheap' for me. Also, didn't like the weight......But that's just me. The sauers are also tac drivers.....then again, so are tikkas. Tikkas are great because they are value for money and they are extremley customisable. But if you've got 2k budget, get a tikka (1499) and put a leupold on it.

Some of the less common ammo is hellish expensive nowadays. makes me hyperventilate when i see it, especially on gun city's site

Mag capacity is not that important as long as it holds over 3 i guess
Caliber, well prehaps 7mm08 is too much? .243 sounds better but almost to small so thats why the 6.5x55 or .260 was being considered, but not sure if their are better other opinions

Maybe less grunt? but still with the punching power, i feel this is going to bring up whats the best all round caliber argument again and not trying to get into that, but .308 sounds boring as good as we all know it is.

he doesn't reload currently (neither do it) but we are both interested in it, problem is Im not sure exactly what gear i need and dont need (can anyone recommend a good book perhaps?)
not too worried on ammo price if its around $60-$70 because it wont be used as a semi auto - obviously cheaper is an advantage but seems even .243 ammo is like $50 these days.

i hunted many years with a 308, just graduated to a 7mm rem mag

Reloading books: Try starting with Nick Harveys practical reloading manual.

You tube offers a lot of tutorial vids on reloading. Pick a caliber you might be interested in, and watch what comes up.

I started reloading with a lee 50th anniversary kit, and it grew from there to better, less effort intensive gear.

Cerakoted is awesome, but if he is rough, it can chip when banged against something hard, stainless may be better.

Also remember that the bore isn’t cerakoted so stainless less prone to rusting if neglected.

Also consider a Howa Alpine Mountain Rifle in 6.5 CM, same price as the others, fully factory cerakoted, same weight as a tikka ultra lite but with a way better composite stock.

It's just a much nicer action, I can work the bolt as fast as I can on a full mag and I can't get it to jam or fail to feed, I can make a tikka do both pretty easy, I think the bolt throw is a bit less with the Sauer also due to its 3 lug bolt. I agree the synthetic stocks aren't as solid as a tikka but they are a much nicer rifle to handle in my opinion, the stock is also slightly better for eye alignment than that of a T3. My Sauer is wood stocked but I handled synthetic also before buying, i cut the barrel on mine straight away so have no idea how it shot out of the box but it's a laser now so assume it would have been good full length also. Sauer action takes any remington 700 mounts/rails etc, 3 position safety on Sauer is a nice feature also

If he's rough on a rifle, okay. If he's likely rough when making ammo (" Put s@#tloads of powder in mate!" ) then maybe it's better that you do the reloading, if you choose to go that way.

2k...I'd tell him to wait a week and he could probably pick up a sako carbonlite off @buzzman :P

Why does he want to replace the howa? It's not really clear what issue you're looking to solve.

Howa's generally shoot well. You can do a lot for scope / other accessories to upgrade it for 2k.

I bought one in wood, thought it was better than the Tikka, in fact i was assured of that.
Looked good to me being a wood guy
Fired no rds at all, wouldn't feed, sent it back, they couldn't fix it had my money back, no response on why it would not feed and what they are doing about it
