Thread: Wooden stock types

Hey everyone, looking at doing some repairs to a stock. Looking for beech/birch?
Going to sacrifice the donor stock for the wood.
These are usually 22 stocks aren't they?
What models usually use it?
Once I know what I'm after I'll put a post up in the buy/sell section

European Beech used for quite a few stocks including Lee Enfields

Fagus Sylvatica is what you are after.

Might pay to call around the Arborist firms in ChCH and ask if they have any logs in the yard? The wood is really common for european rifle stocks but not always easy to spot considering how well it can be stained and refinnished.

Pretty much if the stock isnt walnut its probably Beech. Sure there are a few Elm stocks kicking about but by in large Euro guns of medium quality are stocked in Beech.

An old beaten up stock is really what I am after as bits will be chopped up. And some if it will be close to the shapes I need already

Sounds like you are onto it. Shame your not closer, I milled up a few Beech logs but the slabs are hard to shift.

A lot of cheaper rifles had beech stocks. My Remington Sportsman 78 (cheap 700) has one.

I could donate walnut? Let me know, I,ll be passing thru chch about the 20th may.

@SmokeyJason cheers for that. Dont know if it would match the wood it's going on. The grip would be fine as I reckon I will do something diffo on that anyway (it has no cap etc), but the toe of the stock needs a bit.
Mind you I might (a big might I may add} paint this stock so its all irrelevant lol
