    Freezer filling

The last week had been rain and snow, but the weekend was looking good. The freezer is empty so I grabbed the rifle and went for an overnight trip.
There were a few deer prints in the snow as I headed to the camp area.

A couple of hours later the tent was set up and a warm lunch had.
I headed out to the hunting area and started glassing. First hind seen was down in the bottom of a steep gully. She was nearly 400yds but fed into some thicker scrub and I never saw her again. 30min later 3 hinds were seen on top of the far basin. I moved closer but they got spooked by something and disappeared.
By now it was near 4:30 and I was starting to run out of time. I moved to another basin and picked up a yearling feed down in the main gut. A quick range showed her at 225yds. Shooting prone over my pack one shot had her down. The mum (that I hadn’t seen) ran off and looked back for her yearling. I was tempted to take another but knew that would have been far too much meat for my pack.

I grabbed all the meat and was back at camp at 6:30pm.

Nice! Winter hunting is fantastic. As long as it's not raining.
