    Happy Conveience

Craig rang me mid morning today and it happened that he was driving up country for work, and I was also going up into the same area for work later in the day too. So we conspired for me to bring enough gear up for him and we would meet later in the day for a hunt.

It was a lovely evening in the Nth Wairarapa and there were quite a few deer about. We saw a big 8 that I had seen in the velvet and on on a game camera and various spikers and hinds.

Craig was wanting to shoot a Fallow for meat if we could find one, and right on dark on the way home Tilly winded over a ridge which made us look and there about 80 yards away were 2 Fallow. Good girl Tilly. A last years fawn and a black coloured (what we assumed) doe. Craig had my 7-08 and in a Fatherly way with the thought of whole spit roasted Fallow in mind I whispered "lay down and shoot the hand-bag". So Craig lay down and shot the small one.

It fell over and I could see the "doe" leaping around - "shit" I said " you have hit the doe too, you will have to kill that too". The doe was leaping around and going no-where, and Craig got a good shot into it.

When we got down there it transpired that the "doe" was actually a spiker. So we had the yummy hand-bag and a nice fat spiker. The 7-08 bullet had gone through the fawn and hit the spiker in the lower leg so thank goodness we were able to put it out of its misery.

We couldn't fathom what the fawn was doing wandering around with a spiker for. There was no sign of its mother.

We got back to my truck at 7.30pm and Craig was on his way home by 8pm with all of the meat. I'm staying up here for 3 days work, and I might get another hunt or 2 in...

An interesting and eventful evening with my son. I loved every moment of it.
