What's to stop moose being re-introduced if 'local' people really want to see them there?
Scotland has been plagued with people turning things loose recently (Lynx and boar) trying to guerilla 're-wild' like they did with the beavers :o
Anyone have a handy captive herd of Moose in NZ?
From the few books I have read it was speculated that they died out due to conditions not suiting.
NZ law doesn't allow it. Check out the farcicle goings on with "the crown wapity herd"... Long n short of it,some good pure looking animals live captured to ensure the breed survived when the heady days of venison then live captured decimated the herds,the idea was to release the pure bloodlines back in wild again...but WRONG...law doesn't allow it.
Haven't seen farmed Moose but we have farmed Bison maybe they should be wilded into Fiordland (just joking) but would be a worthy opponent.
The real problem with that plan was that the re-release was intended to be somewhere else on non-National Park public land (and the animals remaining in the Park to be culled as much as possible). No new area could be agreed to work and frankly who would want NZ wapiti anywhere else than in Fiordland?Quote:

It was a few years and a lot of miles between them so a bit hard to do a comparison..
They are both very nice but I'd pick Moose simply because horse is easier to source if I want eat it.
Have eaten both Zebra ( close to horse I assume ?? ) and Moose meats.
Nothing wrong with Zebra if you avaoid the ghastly fat layer, and know the proper cooking technique I guess, but much prefer moose. Very palatable.

To summarise some preferred human company and it was a bugger of a job to return them to the intended area ,at least one needing about 3 repeated efforts .yes one old cow lived her life around a remote farm up there after she beat the human efforts .very interesting and amusing .me Im a believer and whats more given the extensive pakihi/ scrub areas on the coast Id like to see another release of fresh bloodlines .

Apparently one of the cows in the coast liberation took a shine to an unsuspecting prospector .the first he knew was when the tent flap flew open and "hello big boy".Unable to get her out of the love nest ,he took refuge in a large nearby tree until some locals arrived and removed the lovelorn animal returning it to its proper location .
Not untypical apparently because a lot of that group particularly cows periodically showed up on local farms or as one bright individual did ,taking up residence on a main road .the bulls -a lot more solitary apparently one even being sighted at the base of the browning pass (coast side ).this lasted from 1900 -1912 although there are reports of at least one supposed sighting after this . interesting all the same. If your lady love has a large probiscus ,long eyelashes and sharp hooves Id be discretely checking her out and planning a rapid exit!

yes until someone has a quality verified photo it could be a horse or very fat red deer covered in mud and wet

Another fail with any picture. Could make a Tui Ad from this! Waro heli and a hundred or so trail cams over the last 20 yrs or more found.........nothing. Hunters shot .....fu.k all..old skeletons - nah virtually nil in recent years. They gotta die sometime and that was decades ago. Just saying of course.
Probably half the reason is only the foreigners know what they are looking at. Noting as well, both times it's people from North America and from what I can see neither lot was related to the other??? Interesting really. If I'm recalling right, first one claimed a cow and second a bull?
