    Both those work well.

I've just done firewood for the year and cut up a lot of old man pine. It is so full of resin that i'm going to cut some of it up into small bits and take that with me too as an extra fire starter.

    Fire-lighting

you basically need two things - a spark or flame, and initial material. messing with matches in an emergency is a waste of time.

to get a spark, your best option is one of the flints or striker type starters

for material, small patches of bicycle inner tube burn forever, and even when wet.
steelwool is another good option as well as tampons
i carry a small piece of wax candle as well, shaved square so it fits into a smaller space. you can rub the wax on logs or other stuff to make them burn hotter or start burning easier.

+1 but check it first. Some of the new ones won't burn!

Yeah, I think most tubes come outa Korea now and it'll be Kim Jong Un's cunning plan to put a retardant in them to scupper the Kiwi blokes trying to keep warm in the wet bush...

I'm a fan of the bit of candle and inner tube trick. Usually use a lighter to start the fire, and have a spare in the medical kit.

On the bright side, ... I suppose things can only get better.

GM you are the sort of person that notices a tall hooded figure with a scythe trailing him and thinks, "Boy, I'm sure glad I'm not a stalk of wheat". Bloody optimist!

Guilty as charged! Though to be honest I'd probably hope he would approach me in a menacing manner. Any excuse to disarm him as I've been looking for a nice operable scythe for years; just so hard to come by. Yes I know how to use one.
