Phillip and Rushy's different sort of Wednesday

Moonhunt had asked if Rushy and I wanted to head up to the pine block he manages to see if we could get onto a pig. I'd been there a couple times with no luck but it was Rushy's first time.

The plan was for me to head up to Rushy's place on Tuesday night and we'd go for a little fallow hunt, then we'd shoot off to moonhunt's in the morning. So I pulled up to his place around 7 and we went for a quick look out the back of his place but the pines behind his place had been felled way back (they used to go right up to the boundary). Consequently the deer weren't jumping the fence onto his property as they were holding further back. So we didn't have any luck in his normal spot but on the walk back we saw three or four deer on his neighbours property All hinds though so we wouldn't have shot them even if they were on his property.

5.30 the next morning had us up and on our way to moonhunt's. Walking the track that lead down and into the heart of the pines we were getting pretty excited as there was tonnes of sign around and it was fresh too. We had been stalking our way along for about 1.5 hours when we approached an area where I had spooked a pig from it's bed the first time I was in the area. It was on the border of the pines and the native (both on moonhunt's property) where there was a grassy clearing between where the pines finished and the native began. I stalked very slowly keeping my eyes peeled when I spotted a black and caramel ass poking out from the other side of the tree. Took one step back so I could see the full body, yep it's a porker Raised the rifle and let rip at the young boar that never woke from it's sleep. Here he is, my first pig, a lovely eater

Gutted the thing then carried it back to the car up a bit of a gut buster hill. Spun a quick yarn with moonhunt then shot back off Rushy's place to drop him home. We went via his wife's work to boast of our exploits and show her the pig. She told us that when she left in the morning she thought a particular hind on Rushy's farm was having trouble giving birth so we went to have a look. Rushy's wife was right, the hind have a bit of amniotic sac hanging like a dag so we split her off and got her into the crush to see what we could do about it. 3 hours later and minus a few gory details we had come to a point where it didn't look like there was anything we could do for the fawn and her mother so we had to get the 22 out. We both felt pretty rats about it after trying so hard get the poor thing out of her but such is the way it goes sometimes.

Cheers for letting us hunt there moonhunt!
