    Preparation pays off

A bit over a week ago Grunter and I got out for some long range practice to confirm out setups etc, and test out Neckshots hard bastard steel plates. Which all went pretty well, and we got the rifles on the money and verified drops against the results from Shooter.

A week later (last thursday) i had arranged with Grunter to go down to Dundee's farm in Dannervirke and slaughter a lamb for the freezer.

So we thought we might as well and go and check out a new spot and get a quick hunt in before we sorted out the woolly bugger.

So we ventured into a new spot high in the northern Ruahines. Saw four deer fairly early, and tipped this fella up at 7.15am at 470 yards as he fed across an open face back into the scrub for the day.

My longest shot to date. The 162 Amax fired from the 7mm SAUM smashed both shoulder blades and poleaxed him where he stood, a couple of cartwheels and he came to rest just above a steep drop off.

He was in good condition, and despite hitting him in both shoulders there was little meat damage and we recovered all four legs and backsteaks. He had a decent body size and my poor old 40L huntech barely managed to fit a front and a hind leg and one back steak in it, but it did it and survived.

Looking forward to the sausi's and salamis now
