    Rimutaka's

After looking over the map I decided on somewhere I hadn't walked into before. I roughly worked out it would be around a three hour walk in.... Five hours later I made it to where I wanted to camp after a lot of bush bashing. I set up camp and had a nap for a couple of hours because it was really hot and I also knew the wind was going to pick up a little around that time.

There was around half a dozen stags going while I was resting up but it was just way too still to warrant trying to get in close on one of them but as soon as it picked up I was off. The first one I targeted was the most consistent roarer but I soon worked out he was a lot further away than I thought so I pulled the pin. As I was off to the next one out of nowhere there was one going right below me. He was on the move though and getting further away. I made the call to take my boots off quickly because the bush was so dry and gave chase. Once I had closed the gap I gave him a roar and seconds later he was right in front of me. I was still puffing from running after him but still hit him square.

I found him curled up nearby dead. He was a really old 10 pointer with only a couple of loose teeth left. In years gone by he was probably carrying a really good head.

Nice effort, as they say they don't get old by being stupid, outwitting an older stag is it's own reward. Boots off is real quiet, though after all the excitement I would have no doubt lost them.
