I think part of the reason is that many Scandi hunters are using bullets suitable for Moose and Pigs. Like you say, there just is not enough cross sevtion for the bullets to expand before they exit.

The .22 Savage Hi power and 220 Swift with old style "cup and core" bullets would have been devastating on Roe Deer. Probably explains why they were so popular as I can imagine the bullets fragmented and gave a shotgun style wound channel.

Spot on @berg243, thought a Govt might be a bit much! Back in the day there were a couple of guys that used cast lead in 30/30, perfect for roe, keepers on the nearby estate, this is going back almost 40 years. These days I doubt that bullet in a 30/30 would meet their stupid minimum energy laws. The other one I remember at Nutbourne was a combination gun, 20ga I think and a centrefire single shot, something heavy and slow. Some of my earliest memories are standing behind my grandpa with me gawping at these big gruff blokes with their flat caps and old-school rifles, and a row of roe hanging on gambols. And whippets and Jack Russells.
