But, teach it to stay with you. If you need a rope you don't have control.
Sorry if that sounds a bit blunt, but it's the truth.
For peace of mind, run a tracking collar on him.
And that's a hen Pheasant wing not a Falcon.
Jesus. If you're lecturing me then you'll have an apoplexy if you ever watch back ridge butcher.
I used to be a contract hunter this isn't my first rodeo. Of course unlike you I'm not perfect and my dog makes mistakes. But thanks for the feedback.

Hard case. Re photo of the wing. Missus just said it to me and I ran with it without even looking properly. Having never seen a pheasant that far into the bush I just look at her pic and moved on.

It wasn't a lecture so quit with the "unlike you" stuff. I've had plenty of dogs go awol. But usually pig dogs. And tracking gear wasn't available then.
And sorry, but I don't even know what an apoplexy is.
Did you get that dog off Hawkens by any chance?

Awesome result! Lost mine for 6hrs in the Te urewera and that was bad enough, let alone what you went through! Prompted me to splash the cash for a garmin collar for insurance...

I actually have my older one but doesn't have tone or buzz. I've not used it as he's been pretty good. Just doesn't get enough deer work anymore.

You got your mate back, outstanding. And I am sure the rest of your family will be over the moon too.

My dogs really don't go anywhere off lead with out their tracking collars on, people think Im paranoid but its peace of mind knowing where they are when well out of sight.

If you are looking at buying some look for the new model collars TT20 and such (I run both the ecollar versions) as they have a better battery life and also better rescue modes and a sleep mode . the Alpha 300 is a better unit than the Alpha200

They aren't cheap but worth it in "price of mind"

Wow, thank goodness. Thanks for writing so honestly. I could not imagine what that was like. It sounded like you have an e-collar of sorts. With @mikee on Garmin. I've found the Garmin Alpha 200i and TT15 (now 300i and TT20) gold - introduced them at the completion of training and used to reinforce verbal and sign commands. Super useful in the thick bush if he pushes range a little - click the "vibrate" and he circles back (for the old school - he always circles back if I wait, just gives him the "pronto" signal). Peace of mind, and helps me from getting lost. Super useful for remedial training (had to do this on possums a year ago). Thank goodness that pilot kept a look out!

So good to see you got your mate back, and well done Heli Sika for putting in the effort to end up with a good outcome.
