Pengy get yourself a Ranger! Filled up in the Mount on Monday, drove to Auck Airport to collect a pump, came back to The Mount. Tuesday drove from Tauranga to Hamilton airport and back. Filled up again Weds morn, took $64.00 of diesel. @$1.14 per litre
people think that filling the tank is the most important cost in a vehicle, rego , insurance , servicing , road user charges , cost of the vehicle when purchasing , in most vehicles you need to do around 400.000ks before diesel becomes cheaper than petrol.
And that's where the Patrol comes into its own, only just broken in at 400k :)
I get 750km out of a tank in my diesel Patrol, but the modern 4cyl diesels are amazing for economy. Workmates Ranger is unbelievable, much like Macas experience
Depends how you drive what fuel economy you get. I think overall cost wise there won't be that much in it for most people. I prefer the diesel mainly because of its low end torque and, provided you keep the water out of the engine, the lack of a high voltage ignition system to drown in water. On my old diesel Safari with AT tyres and nursing it I managed 1000km on a 65l fill. With mud tyres and more normal driving about 600km on a 65l fill.
I would have thought a '92 would have had a 4.2 TB42 engine in it.

I own a TD42+t, only running 8psi, fan-fucking-tastic tow wagon. Wouldnt own the petrol if you paid me.
I have the 1988 4.2TD and its not very economic to drive and yet pretty gutless. If you must have one get a 4.2deisel turbo'd one, avoid the 2.8turbo they are awful engines.
Issues,
The driver side doors tend to rust badly and a second hand one can cost $500 if you can get one. rear of sills also and firewall.
Steering gear can be best described as like a Peruvian rain forest in its ability to leak fluid.
Seals around the windows leak with age and the rear ones rust badly.
Alternators are fine until they need overhaul and then the seals on the vac pump always go quickly afterward, so dont bother getting one overhauled as brand new alternators with pump are fairly cheap on TM ($500).
If injectors need re-tipping, bye bye $900, injector pump $900~$2k.
Bearings on water pump go but a water pump is cheap ($170 ish).
Winch snap pins are obscene money at $40 odd each, get a mate with a lathe to make them for you, carry 3.
Keep oil in the gearboxes (seals leak a bit) and if you have a rear limited slip diff use the right LS oil. Also If you have a LSD be careful in the wet at 90degree junctions as the LSD cuts in suddenly and you can spin out, even with a gutless engine, hairy to say the least.
Good points they are very tough, and a lot of fun, just need more power.

I've got a '92 Diesel non-turbo Safari. Good solid truck, but electronics a bit temperamental. Compared to my experience with Landcruiser, I'd buy the Toyota next time. More simple set up

Anyway, "heavily modded" in nz means 12psi and an intercooler, "heavily modded" in au means like 180kw and 700nm @ the rear wheels on 33"s, your ranger ain't keeping up with that.
And I'd rather have the Safari off road than the newer stuff.
It's funny, Ive owned two GQ TD42s as dailys, and had one TD42 and one RD28 one as toys, and the only grief I have had was with the RD28t one.
My first daily one, the LWB one that half of the forum has been in at some stage, had 500+ thousand km on it and never missed a beat. The only time it cost me money was due to my own negligence, not checking diff oils after taking it swimming. That and panels, there wasnt an original one left on it! It had water up to the stereo, been tipped on its side etc, yet still wagged its tail in the morning when it saw me :)

I took my 92 safari thru the mataura river halfway up the wind screen. Had no issues and drove on except it blew the heater resistor bank, so heater only goes flat out or not at all now. Anyone got a spare handy?
