Jeep Grand Cherokee
Anything diesel - cheaper to run, even with RUC.
Jeep are a good machine, but they chew through the 91 like an alcoholic through a bottle of bourbon. :D
90's hilux
96-97 Landcruiser Prado!!
Kzn185 surf
90 series prado
Any hilux
I'd be looking at prado or Hilux, guess it depends what your uses will be, family wagon or solely a 4x4 hunting wagon / dog kennel
id go a Toyota or mitsi
Ummm guess it depends what you compare it too. My old 80series is getting 7km/l (need to do oil change, work out how to stop a brake rubbing and get injectors looked at....) still using less than most petrol Jeeps I have heard about.
Having said that, on the Nelson camping trip there was a jeep that showed up, $2K and it a nice truck..
It's all about horses for courses.
Depends on what you are wanting to do with it?
Don't over look Suzuki Grand Vitaras still very capable off road and don't cost a fortune to run.
Did the math a month ago.
If you want a low mileage 4x4 (ie around the 75,000km) at around the $16-17K mark, a Grand Cherokee is your go to vehicle. The equivalent like a Pajero or Parado in age and km's will cost you high $30's. That is a $15k difference in price, or you go for a Mitsi or Toyota for $15k that is knocking on 200-250,000km.
Did the comparison on fuel cost only, for 20,000km/year, feeding the Jeep on 98 as apposed to 91, and it came out to just over $1k more per year in fuel cost as apposed to a diesel Pajero with RUC's. This dropped considerably if you feed it 91. Then, if you take into account the cost of servicing a diesel versus a petrol, and the debt servicing on the extra $15k (if you a buying a Mitsi/Toy of same age and km's as the Jeep), plus the depreciation on the $30k vehicle, the extra $1k you are paying in fuel per year on 20,000km is completely negated. Then if you consider the risks of buying a $15k, +15 year old diesel which has done 200,000km (injectors, pump, etc), you could be up for a major bill that adds $5-10k to the cost of your old diesel.
I would rather buy a younger, lower km, lower cost (for age and km's), petrol Jeep and pay a bit more on a weekly basis at the pump, than run the risk with an old diesel.
Its all about risk and economics.
PS - I have nothing against Mitsi or Toyota. Immediate family has owned 3x L200's, 2x Challengers, 5x Hilux/Surf, and a Parado!
Nissan mistrals are 2.7td, cheap as chips, but ugly
Be careful what Jeep you get some are real pieces of shit
Grand Cherokee is unibody, no?
Yea, she looks like a uni to me ....

as in not body-on-chassis.
Slight thread hijack but does anyone have an opinion (hahaha as if!) on the auto gearboxes in a 95/96 Surf.
I am mechanically retarded and wondered if I was buying a whole lot of trouble with a low Ks Auto Surf?
Cheers
Be aware that the Jeeps have a tendency to break off road and parts tend to be very expensive.
And I think the term you are after is monocoque construction which I'd again avoid for off road use.
The Jeep I saw over he weekend had nothing and I mean NOTHING on je rear end to tow off because of the uni body, only thing under the rear end was the fuel tank...
thanks for all the suggestions guys - i avoided putting too many stipulations at the start to keep the field wide open.
A few "must have's" on my wish list are - reliable, low cost to run (rules out 4L Jeep petrol :ORLY:), manual, parts & servicing available and "cheap".
the blond accessories in fish nets would be a nice upgrade too btw.
Having to be a manual will make the choices a little easier
Go for an auto if you want cheaper to run. Typically you are doing near enough to 1000rpm less at the open road speed limit. I hate autos but my next one will probably be an auto. They are easier for shooting from.
My automatic 80series vx sits at 2200rpm at 100km/h currently getting 7km/l, around 500km for a 80l tank. Guess it's what you get for full time four wheel drive running mud tyres that just fit in the factory wheel arches without flares.
Non turboed vc so she sure is a slug
I just love how on American forums they refer to jeeps as "heeps"
Series 1 or 2 Landrover Discovery.
The Safari was pretty economical. Probably about 2/3 the fuel consumption of the manual Bighorn. I know people with heavy feet that get substantially better economy from their auto Bighorns than I do from my manual. A lot depends on how heavy the drivers right foot is.
Hey Team,
small hijack, but I am in a similar dilemma.
I was down in Te Puke Area over the weekend and have come to the conclusion that my 2016 Kia Sportage is not the ideal transport to out of the way hunting locations, especially on the back forestry roads and paddocks.
on a reasonably small budget at the moment, with the intention of upgrading the bought vehicle to be more offroad in the near future. with this in mind vehicle has to be reasonable on fuel, and reliable, spares cost at a reasonable rate would be a plus as well.
I have been looking at a Suzuki and a Mitsi as per below.
which one would you guys go for, and why? Bearing in mind this would be solely a weekend car, and low to medium 4x4 use.
