Thread: Extractors on Suzuki Vitara

    Extractors on Suzuki Vitara

    I am doing up the head etc on my 96 Vitara and am looking at finally replacing the original exhaust manifold with extractors for better heat reduction. I managed to overheat and crack the head.

    Wondering if anyone knows what brands of extractors are around and who makes / supply's them I have found a couple but I have never heard of either brand. One is Coby and the other is Rage.

    Its an aluminium head and block with a cast iron exhaust manifold hence the seeking out of a new extractor set.

    Got a new head on its way, and will be doing water pump (New) and radiator (Flush /service / check) cam belt etc so spending quite a bit on a car that is worth nearly what the repair will be.....

    coby has been around for forever i can remember putting coby extractors and resonators on a couple of valiants i had in the early 80s.... they were the go to back in the day

    I got mine done by the exhaust outfit behind Rangiora Repco, was a while ago now but they did a great job and was pretty reasonably priced. well worth contacting them.

    What Dannyb said would be wort a shot. Pity i am not in a shop with normal steel, we could probably make one.
    Same comments on Coby as everyone. As for Rage, do they have them in stock/ If you can get your hands on one of them and see how well made they are, that might make a diffo if they are cheaper.
    if you need a hand sing out Tim. Probably a bit limited with work at the moment but i know what a couple of people can do working together on this stuff

    I’ve got a snorkel for a 2.4 petrol grand vitara in the shed. Sold car before snorkel fitted. Any use?

    Vitara have a habit of overheating if the fan clutch fails or someone leaves the radiator shroud off

    A set of hand made extractors will help if used with iridium plugs, and keep the antifreeze changes regular and use top quality

    It wouldn’t hurt to put a 12 inch daviescraig elec fan on the front of the radiator with its own thermostat switch as added protection

    They can be down on power and spend more time than usual on WOT on the highway
    A big fast bullet beats a little fast bullet every time

    Mine gets used for dragging my trailer around a fair bit. We have been chasing a miss that has been really annoying for about 6 to 8 months. Changed plugs, leads, dizzy, rotor, fuel filter and Mass air flow sensor (That caused a similar issue some years back) . In some ways it is a releif to know that it was water getting into the back cylinder as at least I know what it was now....

    As for WOT , I tend to sit at about 90 as I usually have the trailer on, but will pull over to let others pass. I usually catch up to them at the next truck anyway so figure in most cases not worth going faster....

    @dannyb @csmiffy sounds like a plan. I will check them out. If Coby and Rage are OK then I dont mind, one is $400 and the other $500. I just did not want to buy one I have not heard of and find out they were not great ....A bit like sub silent suppressors...Anyone remember rev rog..?

    Not sure Im exactly following what you're trying to achieve - replacing the extractors is one thing but it won't by itself achieve a huge deal. As part of a free flow exhaust system, opening any intake restrictions and a careful look at engine bay heat control (lagging extractors etc) it would help. The heat is coming from in the engine, so getting the gasses out is the trick. The other thing is a brand new upgraded radiator with extra capacity and uprated fan(s). If you have a miss in one of these, you generally experience what you found with induction then shortly after either head(s) off or replacement donkey. Sometimes that doesn't fix the miss too...

    I am hoping it is the cause of the miss- I feel like I have tried everything else.....

    For the most part it works OK. I am not looking for power or performance. I am happy with standard performance and reliability and for what I do, bog standard has been fine. I have had it for over 100,000km and In fact all I am really trying to achieve is reduce as many contributing factors to it finally breaking as I can. Apparently one of the contributing factors to the heads on these vehicles going is the fact that the head and block are aluminium and the standard exhaust manifild is cast iron. The manifild as it is retains a lot of heat even after the block and head cool down, which extractor headers help address. Its not getting a hard time (270,000km on it and as far as we can tell it is the first time the head has been off....)

    The radiator is on the list seeing as I will have to get it checked anyway, as is anything else I can do while I am in there so hopefully we can leave "the lid on" for another 250,000km.....

    Cobys......oh yeah,the loud cars of the 80s all had them........ they have been around for a very long time.
    dont know squat about your wagon but when we had towing issues with the terrano,a wee cooler put on trans made all the difference and we have had zero issues since...apparently the patrols need same extra radiator to get the best out of them.

    @No.3 I know what you mean but extractors can help.
    Know a mate that that did that to his 2.4 surf years ago for the same reason

    Every little thing helps, but to really get the most from the 'each little thing' it would pay to do the lot. I would make a point of sorting the miss issues before spending a heap of coin on it, the one I helped on that was bad for missing and losing HP (really flat off the line and missing and farting about for no really easy to id reason) got a lot of work done to it but even with the replacement engine it still had the miss. Ended up getting sold with the miss and a boot full of once-used parts, I can't remember if the new owner sorted the thing. Apart from the miss (it had replacement or fully checked out coils, ecu, MAF sensor, oxygen sensors, crank angle/knock, cam, temp, oil pressure and temp, the whole 19 yards). I can't think off hand of anything that wasn't tried and the bitch still missed and farted about. Possibly the only thing left would have been the loom, but they even checked that out and cleared it...
