Thread: Home build 3.4m Alloy Jetboat (photo heavy)

Four months so far, just finishing touches really to go.

Bought Scrimshaw (of Dannevirke) plans and changed them a wee bit - mainly adding hull length and then more length past the transom, adding a transom box.

Later on in the piece we found it really difficult to get the windscreen looking good and personally I hate the low round style, so we changed that too with just designing an older style screen with cardboard then cutting out the alloy.

Plans cut out by Axis routers in Hastings.
Alloy carted round by yours truly and folded again by me in the press break at work.

Tacked and welded in my garage by myself and my bf.

All "finishing" welding on the top is TIG, all the other bits I did at work on the weekends. Funny when I spent bloody ages folding the engine cover perfectly..... only to find that the hull isn't actually square. A few quick tweaks and she fits like a dream now.

Seats made at home by me on the fabric welder.

Stickers by HB Signs in Hastings.

Rego inspired by my name, obviously, seeing as I'm such a narcissist.

Powered by a GP1300 that is a direct pluck out of another 3.4hull so the loom and gages were all good to go really.

I'm unsure about the name of the jet unit as that was so expensive that I have tried to block my brain off from all of that information and left it to the bf. Basically the whole set up is from a JetSki though.

Steering is a brand new push pull Jettech unit I think it's called? It's made specifically for jet boats, bought from the mediocre wet mops over at Freeman Marine in Napier. Ha ha.

It's been a great learning experience. I think I would enjoy building another one again but while we still had a boat on the water... things have been quite rushed as we sold our old steel boat to find this project. Although I have enjoyed borrowing my friend's small steel hull, we have been pushing to get into our own boat.

We have had one run at Clive and one on the Ngaruroro, before the handles and foot plates were in. This boat is bloody fast. It turns well which is a relief considering the changes we have made to the plans.

Headed out again this Sunday. Should be fun to try to get it a few more tricky places - it wasn't wise to be doing anything too dangerous last week without the ability to keep oneself in the hull if we stopped abruptly.

A strip of bizloy on the bottom will happen at some stage.

Thanks, it's been fun. Hard work to get yourself to work on weekends though. My hunting has suffered for it this roar.

put some marine carpet on the inside, on top of the treadplate. People think the treadplate helps from slipping. It doesn't!
Wet feet on treadplate are still dangerous.

The purpose of the checker was just because we had some 6mm left over from a job and bought it off the boss cheap.

The floor gets quite wet so we will leave it uncarpeted I think the inside is quite small, there is a foot plate for when you are seated otherwise there isn't much movement of people inside the boat.

The nose has a sheet of the grippy foamy type stuff that is where you put your feet on a JetSki. That's also on the reinforced dash for standing on.

Outdoor carpet is on the engine cover both to dampen sound and also minimise the frying pan effect of alloy in the sunshine.

Uhhhh sheets... probably five now not including the bottom?

Welders are works. We have two Millers and I wouldn't know what the big MIG is. Come to think of it the small TIG "little red" is a miller as well.

My TIG isn't quite weld porn yet but here are some fatties on the MIG I'm proud of... should take some pics of the trailer too as I've done a lot of work on that.

well if you d like dougie -Pengie can do the job -his stubby wee flippers make great skis and he dont mind a little gettin wet.
