That demo went back with clutch issues and gearbox issues if I recall correctly, however both problems are common to all our popular modern utes cos they are to bloody high geared trying to get the open road fuel economy.
    He bought a new Colorado.

Boss is about to upgrade shagger to a Ford so should drive one soon.
I had a 2009 Colorado auto, did 100 is in it, great vehicle, handled well and nice to drive. Didn't buy awe one because of that 2.8 engine, they just haven't got it right and the vibration in the drive train, common I believe, the blue tooth is evidently really poor. I think the finish over all better than the ford, but glad I didn't get one, that 5 cylinder motor is bloody good and I get between 8.3 and 8.8 is per 100 out of it. But in saying that guy up the road has a very expensive Wildtrack and he has shit loads of electrical probs, Friday car me thinks

Munsey, next door neighbour, a builders just bought a new SR5 and loves it, I nearly bought one, things that put me off, complete new ute coming out in 2015, ride is hard, but if you carry weight all the time the springs will be working and that will help, they had gearbox and injector issues, but sales guy said they were sorted, the cost more than my Ford cause they only do 4x4. They are not #1 on the list anymore and my sales guy was pissed about that, my advice would be if the deals good, screw them a little more, the offered me a trip to Aussie as well! And buy it they are a proven work horse and you get a warranty to cover yourself. And history shows they hold their value

Thanks for input everyone ( good an bad ) . The main reason I'd buy one over anything else is resale! . I can get into brand new ute , canopy tuff deck ( used) and auto 45 k drive away . That's a shit load of money but some utes are 50 something + on road + canopy 3 k . Maybe the ranger will hold there value ? My one owner ford courier hasn't . Crystal ball stuff really

Hate the way those two to three year old Mazdas and Ford utes break this pipe.
Heres my mates one. Anyone want to guess the just out of warranty labour cost ?
No help from any direction. Ever see a HiLux in that many bits? Local sparkies Ford did same in my carpark few days ago left on a trailer.
That's just one story. The one where the motor filled with diesel and locked up in the middle of no where is another not forgetting the starter issues
or the gearbox failure... Its so hard to decide ...

    New hilux

I drive either a ranger or Triton every day for work on roads or 4wd.
The Tritons are seriously falling apart after 18 months, the rangers are reasonably nice but really are gay and having issues.

Hilux all the way Munsey, if you don't like it and want to sell it, it will not be worth half what you paid for it until it is really old and has ridiculous mileage.
None of the other vehicles come close on resale.

I guess it depends what you want it for.
I've got a 2002 SR5 Hilux .. Its Awesome off road .. and -ok- on it .. floaty and bouncy. but hey you cant have everything

My mates got a 2005 Sheepshagger and its -OK- I've driven it on road and off, and its great on road - and good off road but not as good as my 2002.

My Cousin has the 2011 Sheepshagger and has said that the traction control has made it dangerous on the open road and he'd never have a trailer behind one ever after the traction control just about killed him. He's also had reliability issues ...

If I were buying new I'd be looking at the Landcruiser double cab ... but you're looking at 80K for one of those

Eight hours to remove and refit the starter motor on the V8 cruisers. It's in the valley, under everything!

As for the 1KD P.O.S did anyone say injector seats?

Wouldn't own another hilux. My sheepshagger was the most unreliable vehicle I've owned, and I've owned Fords and Mitsis before that Did clutch, injectors twice, once when the engine blew to bits and I had to rebuild it, brakes, wheel bearings. All way before stuff like that should have been done in any normally used vehicle.

I'd be spending similar coin on a mid 2000's 100 series VX Landcruiser. 100 times the vehicle, 100 times more comfortable on and off road, 100 times more reliable and it will be worth more than the hilux even after 15 years of driving the thing.

Iv seen plenty of broken hiluxes, the company I contract to uses them but this and all the above is just anecdotal and about as use full as a 2 shot group really . Iv had mitsis for 30 years (on the 5th one now) with only one glitch when the syncro went on first gear, local dealer covered most of the cost even though it was well out of warranty. My current ute is 8 years old, paid 40k and have been offered 19 for a trade on a new one at 42k with a 10 year warranty. Nothing is perfect, every model will have its lemons so buy what what ever ya like.

    Funny how experiences differ.
I have had hilux and Toyota cars since the early 90's and never had an issue. 3 mates I have, have had the same trouble free running to the best of my knowledge.
I have had the odd bad experience with pussy but it hasn't put me off it.
There are only a couple other ways to go, if you do turn off it.

If I was in your position and looking for a new 4wd ute at a good price I would go with the Hilux or Navara. If you are wanting max resale value from it go with the Hilux.

I have had two Navaras but have just recently changed to a Ranger. After driving them all I would rank the Hilux the worst on road, however it is not far behind and certenly not terrible.

I think you need to be realistic about the fact that the Hilux and Navara are a 2005-2006 vehicle with slight improvements, where the Amarok, Ranger and Colorado are a 2011-2012 new from scratch vehicle and therefore are quite an improvement.
I guess unless you want to pay significantly more for a new ute you are kind of stuck with the Hilux or Navara, my Ranger cost $61k inc all accessories and the price on the Amarok was another 4.5k more, so the Narara and Hilux represent good buying at 45k.

From what you have said here I think your on the right track for what YOU require. Go the Hilux.
