Thread: outboard issues

my 75hp mercury outboard wont start,i think it could be due to an airlock in the fuel line i prime it till the bulb goes hard, i can still see air in the fuel filter, when i release the pressure from the priming the bubble get bigger again like its under pressure. is there any way to bleed the lines? after trying to start it there isnt any fuel getting to the motor, cant smell any fuel like you do when a motor turns over for a while and dosent fire, plugs are dry, put new plug in it just to make sure.

any ideas??

I'm not very mechanical , but Only time I've had issues with motor not starting is water in the fuel . Had to drain carb and start back with fresh fuel , good to go ! . At the time it did appear that fuel wasn't getting through .

well now i see theres fuel leaking out the exhaust onto the ground, i take the plugs out, turn it over, put them back in, it fires once then dosent go again. seems to be primed properly.

You may have a faulty fuel pump?
I'm assuming you've checked to see your sparkplugs are sparking?

Feed the bitch on ether to see if it runs...work back from that.

fed it a can, no go still.

Problem is in the motor then (IMO)...if it wont run on that shit, it wont run on petrol...do you have compression?

Dry your plugs out. Dont prime but try and start on ether. If it runs try priming again. Your primer bulb may be at fault

Not up on the black motors.

Presumably there will be a small in line filter just inside the cowling. Check that is not blocked.
Remove all plugs and check for spark on each.
without a compresson tester all you can do is hold your thumb firmly on the plug holes as its wound over, they should all blow and suck.

remove all carb float bowls and check for water/crud in the bottom.
with bowls off blow threw fuel feed and check air flows into bowl area and that it shuts off when float is lifted.
DONT BEND ANY THING RELATED TO FLOAT HIGHT.

If possible remove outlet from fuel pump and check it is pumping.

Check the fittings on your tank and primer bulb for sealing/Shit etc.

You have your hose hooked up the right way and are not trying to suck fuel out of the motor and pump it into the tank?

If it has air,spark,compression, and fuel it should go.

If fuel is literally running out the exhaust but your plugs are not wet this is very odd!?

ill have another go in the morning and check all the, but its strange that it was going mint a week ago.

I had that in my yammie, Never stopped and would start but the fuel was pouring out the exhaust at cruise. Went from 1.4km per/l to 3km p/l so knew something was wrong. Had the dogey one replaced and the other ones too as a precaution and now all good, touch wood
