Going to replace a 2009 Forester with a similar type of vehicle. Looking at Nissan X-trail or Toyota Rav4. Can spend between $15-$20k. Any advice? What other models would fit the bill?

Mitsubishi Pajero bit agricultural but reliable tough -
I have an 09 forester XT with 200+ on the clock (getting tired, maybe only a two years left in it I reckon), and an '08 suzuki grand vitara at about half that. The vitara V6 is a little on the thirsty side but full time 4wd with a low range, not much else in the small SUV category has that. Clearance is a bit of an issue, but its comfy and handles well.
Avoid high KM x-trails with the CVT box, if the CVT hasn't been well maintained you have no idea when it will fail (if it has, they're still only reliable for about the first 250,000km)
If you don't mind a V6 and the fuel, the 2nd gen toyota highlander is quite reliable and capable for a 'soft road' family SUV, fits your price range.

I just sold my Forester (2009). Good car!
I love my forester but it's got a cracked gasket causing an external coolant leak. My mechanic is trying to sort out a replacement motor but not having much luck (apparently subaru motors are very model specific). In the meantime thought I'd better think about getting something else. Sounds like I'd better avoid the Nissan! Thanks for the replies guys.

If you're not ageist, what about a Mitsi Delica? They are incredibly good wagons, basically a Pajero chasis with a van body, loads of seats, loads of room 4wd, whats not to like? They are getting long in the tooth now but a good one is worth it's weight in gold, well, not quite but you get my drift. Failing that a late model 3L Hilux Surf, I believe they ran until 2004....I know I know, everything I talk about is old but golden era, good trucks without all the electronic crap that seems to give everyone grief....I can tell you stay the hell away from Nissan's.......I've strayed from Toyota/Landrover twice.......neither time ended well, they just don't seem to make vehicles that can manage more than 250,000kms without major spending
