Try a secondhand Volvo - waiting for incoming ;-).
Bought a 2007 XC90 SUV off TM, before we came home from the West Island.
2.4L turbo diesel, 6 speed auto, 7 seats, auto AWD, electric most stuff, just the two of us, so heaps of room for non-essential fripperies.
Last trip to AKL - filled up the night before, Ngaruawahia for the first top up.
Ngaruawahia - Muriwai for a wedding.
Then Muriwai to Taihape for the second top up, before heading home. Averaging 500+ MILES/ tank full (70L).
Used the cruise control a lot - much more economy that way.
88,000 miles to 120,000 miles - love it - and the cambelt had been done in the UK, before being shipped out by the previous owner.
No image problems, so no 'boy/men racers' issues - just tootle off - VERY QUICKLY - and leave them to play with HSV and FPV owners. :-)
Wellington dealers charge - OUCH!!! - but have a local guy in Masterton, who is much more reasonable.
Highly underrated IMO - resale might hurt, but not really that fussed about changing.
So good, my little run around is a Volvo too - V50 s/wagon ex Japan.
Language is an issue - can't read it - but car goes very, very well.
Worth a look mate.
