well maybe not many times one only has to move a few feet to be out once the suction is broken its advantage is that its can go onto any wheel and folds away really small - the problem with a permenent front winch is that the stuck quad can really only go the way the winch is pointing - but a huge advantage of a mounted winch with a ground anchor one can skin deer with them - thats a bonus
You can rig them using a range of pulleys and extra rope and fluff and extra kilos of crap - so that the winch's pull is reversed. But that's a pain in the bum too! I have had my doubts about the permanently mounted winch when I had a chunk of slope drop away in front of me closing the road effectively. Muddy, so couldn't easily reverse as well. Bugger... Needed to be recovered, couldn't self recover in that situation with the winch on the front. That's where I got discovered into the sling mounted winch setup with recovery points and a power take off at either end. Bonus is you can leave it at home when you're towning it...
now if one was really really clever one could rig a winch so that it could be quickly mounted front or rear with a frame either end and a few pins to hold it - my great idea for the day - I get the idea of pulleys and deadmen to use a front winch to pull backwoods but man how much stuff does one want to carry - the alternative is a winch that is not mounted permenently but rather taken to deadman with a lead and used from the anchor point - that then can be used either end of the quad or side by side - there is one powered by a chainsaw engine - then there is the old 6 foot manuka stick and a rope windlass - works but a big side by side maybe not
Hi Guys
as my Traxter Quad came with a winch in the front i just fitted one @ the back too
but thinking about it now if i did it again i would set up a tow ball in the front ,handy to back trailers by pushing them
one could then have a trailer hitch on the winch frame to connect @ both ends same with the electric connection .
If you really like to go places where you perhaps out not to hahaa fit tow balls on or around the foot pegs thus you could sling your self along a very slippery slop
There's a setup that looks a little like snow chains - one wheel only though and it's got a few metres of solid webbing attached. Basically it rolls the webbing up around the wheel - just enough to get you unstuck. Bit of a pest to set up I'd say but if you had nothing else it would save your bum...
looks like something that would be worth sticking on the front tray - just in case - thats if you did not wish to go to the expense of a real winch
