You can rig them using a range of pulleys and extra rope and fluff and extra kilos of crap - so that the winch's pull is reversed. But that's a pain in the bum too! I have had my doubts about the permanently mounted winch when I had a chunk of slope drop away in front of me closing the road effectively. Muddy, so couldn't easily reverse as well. Bugger... Needed to be recovered, couldn't self recover in that situation with the winch on the front. That's where I got discovered into the sling mounted winch setup with recovery points and a power take off at either end. Bonus is you can leave it at home when you're towning it...
