Looks a little tougher than most.
Swazi made/makes one out of synthetic down. It too looks good but I doubt it will match the Cactus for durability.
Cactus gear is generally about as tough as it gets. :)
I always thought down jackets were just for girls but that actually looks useful, especially being waterproof.
The Cactus version will be tough as nails, just like all their other gear.
Also very worth while taking a look at gear from Wear On Earth in Christchurch.
A friend purchased a down jacket from them a couple of months ago and it's one of the best that I've seen at a very reasonable price, they will make them custom to order too...they also do other stuff like sleeping bags.

I swear by my cactus pants and shorts for work. They're amazingly tough so I'd be confident in any of their gear. If you're in the outdoor professions apply for their "pro buyer" membership. They really sharpen their prices.
Pretty sure one of my workmates has a custom wear on earth down jacket. He got a heavier duty outer fabric, he hasn't managed to rip this one yet, his previous jacket was covered in duct tape.
I will definitely be looking at the Cactus jacket when it comes out. Just a shame that they don't have them in retail outlets to try on etc.
All the same, the company supports SAR , so I will try to support them
hai dere,
bought a outdoor research 800 loft puffer jacket, with waterproof shell, have worn it in the rain twice and YES its actually waterproof, was $380 at bivouac on spesh. don't know why you would bother with a synthetic jacket, the main benefits of down are that it packs down nice and compact and keeps you warm. realisticly, its not ideal to wear these sorts of jackets purposely in the rain so in theory if its raining, wear a rainjacket and then theres no need for a synthetic jacket that might or might not stay warm when it gets wet.
I see this cactus stuff, but some of their prices are a bit exorbidant so ill stick to the better value euro stuff in the meantime.
I own a lot of cactus gear, and none of it had died yet.
I have to get them to custom fit the pants and shorts-they are very happy to do so.
And as had been said, if you a in any way work wise connected with the outdoors they do very good discounts. Still not cheep. But worth asking for.
The new canvas down jacket looks pretty good.
Earth Sea Sky have a primaloft jacket out soon also, worth a look I would think.
The Cactus jacket is made by Wear On Earth in Chch.
I bought a wear on earth jacket in 2003. It went to the top of a lot of mountains, round the world, covered in duct tape from rips. I sent it back to Blair at wear on earth in 2013 after 10 years to get a zip repaired. Talked to him about buying a new one with a hood on it. It came back to me, with a new zip, new hood, all re stuffed, all panels resewn. And he charged me nothing.
I can't possibly talk high enough about his customer service or his jackets.
Unfortunately it was stolen last year.
I'll be buying another for sure
Just picked my wear on earth up, very happy and just in time cause it's bloody cold and drizzly down here
I ripped my Riverworks waders on opening weekend last year. Sent them back expecting to have to pay for the repair as it was my fault. Riverworks fiixed them and couriered them back for free. Still a few good companies out there.
Just ordered my Wear on Earth jacket , What a easy going bloke to deal with . Tell him what you want and he can't be more helpful . Highly recommend the service . Heads up he has a heavy fabric in olive , in limited supply , if anyone keen . !00 % waterproof .
Have been wearing mine every morning, real good jacket
yep easy as
Glad it worked out for you! ;-)
Attachment 39877It's arrived  But too fecking hot to wear it today :oh noes:. Very pleased with it , will be a valuable asset to my hunting pack . highly recommend this company . For a product you can see being made in front of you , not Shanghai ! Very good value for money
How is the jacket? I'm tempted to order one... I heard on their FB page that their shop has closed?? @PerazziSC3
Yep very good jackets, no issues. They are big tho, not like a typical puffer that can pack down to nothing but then they are a lot stronger than a normal puffer
Apparently he can make the jackets with a lighter material to make it more compactable. I'm heading to CHCH next Thursday, might get fitted up. @PerazziSC3
I want it to be practical to take on 4/5 day biv hunts
+1 for wear on earth. Stoked with mine, my ice and long, gave them my measurements and it came back bang on
I just ordered mine today @223nut @Munsey. He has a version which can compact into one of the pockets. Got the 2 tone hooded version, I've had a heavier waterproof fabric made for the hood and shoulders/sleeves, the body is a lighter fabric.
Did you guys know he supplies the jackets for the NZ Army? I went to the workshop and got the tour, he's in the process of upgrading his premises.
