    Compact gear

    Hey team,
looking to make my gear a little more compact
Sick of having my bag full when most of it is bulky items

First item is a jersey, anything warm seem to be bulky
    What's everyone using??
Have my cooking system spot on
Sleeping bag and jacket next on hit list

Sleeping bag and roll mat will make a big difference. I went from a Macpac solstice 700gr bag and a normal thermarest to a Macpac express 400gr and thermarest Neoair regular. Saved heaps of space and 500gr ish of weight.

Jersey - go for a down jacket. You do need to be a bit careful with them though.
I use two lightweight long sleeve thermal tops, a fleece t shirt and a windbloc sleeveless vest.

Had thought of trying the stony creek puffer jacket,
How do you find the 400g bag this time of year?

Getting a bit cool. Must admit haven't used it this time of year, but I feel it is as warm as my old solstice. Better lofting down makes a difference. I'd think about wearing my down jacket in it this time of year.

I carry a fleece top and a macpac ultralight down jacket. warm down to below zero. I also use a Macpac 400gm fill bag and it's marginal below zero but ok in huts in winter.

Merino base layer, polarfleece shirt (thicker according to the season) then a S/Creek Huntlite jacket

All with zips down the front for dumping heat when going up a hill

Mates use those puffer jackets for warmth at camp - looks like a good idea

I used to buy a tool for everything and I was constantly adjusting and fucking about with things - now to save weight I look for things that do "double duty" and don't muck about so much

A heavy pack is often made up of lots of light things, if you know what I mean

Mammut foraker is good warmth for weight, and you don't need to be quite as careful as with down.

I picked up a Macpac Uber Light jacket on clearance for just $85 a couple of weeks ago. Packs quite small.

Purchased a Enlightened Equipment Convert and am really loving it [850 loft, -12degC, long, XWide]. In the hut I tend to use it as a duvet, but if it gets really cold, zip it up as a bag and its a furnace. As a duvet, its about 30% of the heat retention compared to when it is zipped up as a bag. If you are still cold, put a base layer on.

How small does it pack down?
Montbell is winning this aspect so far

I use a lightweight montbell, it's tiny, on the tops at this time of year it's pretty chilly in it so deff wear my puffer jacket and thermals, it's my feet the cop it so about now I switch to the winter bag, another mont bell but a lot warmer and bulkier

Dont waste your time chasing every last fps, it doesnt matter in the real world, it wont make a difference, all it will do is cause head aches and frustrations. And dont listen to silly old cunts
