2nd hand macpac gets my vote, cheaper than any 'hunting' pack and good value for money
Simple top load design with no zips to break
my 'day' bag is a macpac ravine that I got for $60, could get away with a smaller pack but at $60 it works for me, also plenty of room for winter trips where extra layers soon bulk out available space plus I carry a camera and tripod.
I use a narrow dry bag and load my gear into that, which keeps it all straight up and down and against my back ( ie not in a big bunch at the bottom of my pack) then I cinch up the side straps and it compresses the bag, keeps the profile of the pack down and as small as possible
