So for a while now I've been hunting around for a good waterproof/windproof layer and there's a LOT of options out there (as I discovered trolling through the forum) and the range of options was matched by the range in quality, price and suitability....I was also a bit wtf at some of the prices $1000 seemed a bit excessive for what was undoubtedly a good bit of kit but really? It seems that hunting, much like boating and horse riding seems to attract a "the user will allow themselves to be raped" sales tax. Then I recalled that back in the day, I virtually lived in an army surplus jacket, along with the german para boots and both were excellent, which figures, you're not going to go to war in gear that won't last, even if it is supplied by contracts that are fulfilled on a price first basis.
Anyway, I just got hold of this from Army & Outdoors, I thought I'd ordered a Grade 1 but that seems to have translated into brand spankers. It's got everything I need and nothing I don't, generous cut without being an actual tent, two big armpit heat dumps as well as two on the chest, lots of BIG pockets, drawstring hood that snugs to your forehead whilst the wire supported porch keeps rain well off the face, with the added plus of being able to fold the porch back to regain good peripheral vision velco'd wrist cuffs and other drawstrings to snug it in at waist and hem AND it's only 1kg AND...it was $80 to my door...anyway just thought I'd share it in case any of you are in the market for something like this.
