Yep - the HID is now a thing of the past. The upgraded M24 took care of that, and the 2X surprised me with it's increased throw. That larger reflector definitely does the job.
I guess the biggest difference for me was the more natural colour tint of the M24 and 2X as opposed to the really bluish tint of the HID. It just makes spotting animals a lot easier as everything is not washed out.

Stunning!!
Yes the Maxtochs designed for extreme range but also optimum colour rendition. As close to natural colour as possible downrange - with a bit of old school halogen lemon tint chucked in to cut through atmospheric fog and crap.
If those cows on the back ridge were centre beam I do not doubt they'd still show up very clearly at 1200m/1300 yards.
That's the best extreme range photography we've seen. Wicked.

Cant wait to get some clearer nights down here when out of town.

Quentin I would be interested to check the Maxtoch 2X at that range in its medium mode. Medium also has huge range at about 250k lux (high mode 365k), and is the normal hunting mode for the light - with longer runtime.
No need for photo if its a hassle, but would be keen to know how well the 2X's medium picks up those 800m rocks. Should also do it ok..
On one of our sites beside the mountains we get the maximum distance from the lights, but on another with rivers in the area we are down to like half the distance by midnight. Alot of moisture build-up in the air after a while - good for people to bear in mind.
-
I'll see if the night is clear again, and then get some shots of the 2X on all three settings.
As you pointed out, atmospheric conditions play a huge amount to the lights throw, so there is little point if it's hazy.

My 2X is on the water- can't wait :yaeh am not durnk:

Those are some incredible picture or an awesome torch, makes me want to get another one!!!

Thanks for that - amazing power output - alot of light out there on high beam. Very pleased to see medium mode also lights up the terrain at 800m - looks like it also would pick up a cattle beast at 1000m. It should do at 250k plus.
With my Maxtochs I really enjoy lighting up ridges - then the ridge past that, and the ridge after that.. I try to run the 2X in medium when spotting (for long runtimes) but its a bit hard to pick high from medium at times because as you can tell in the 200m pics they both throw so much light out.
Awesome pics.

What percentage is the low?
-
Low mode is set for possum shooting, walking etc. It is 0.6 amps, about 13% of high mode, and produces about 40-45k lux with max range of round 400 meters.
-
@Wirehunt - this was one of your 2X's, so you know it has the throw there if you want to get out the centrefire rifles and deal to those critters.

Great pics Quentin.
Gadget and I very pleased with the latest M24 and 2X. You can use either for any job, or together (got an M24 on my rifle and 2X as handheld) they make an unbeatable combination. No plan to design any more LR handheld torches until Cree produces some new type of led.
But ... we are looking at a lightweight long range headlamp and have specs on the drawing board with Maxtoch. Won't be soon but we'll see what happens. We are not after super long range with a new headlamp - the M24s and 2Xs do that job - but we are looking at say 500m range. I get very concerned when I see people paying a massive $499 for the latest 'high technology' led lenser XEO-19R headlamp - which costs as much as a rifle, weighs 478gms (heavier than Maxtoch 2X handheld with batts in it), has poor runtimes, and a range of just 300 meters. What an absolute crock.
I have a 3-4 year old chinese headlight - quite well made and after gadget popped a new dedomed led in it the other day it produces a 400m beam. Price - about $36 total. WTF? So we'll take a look at a genuine high performer, with some genuine high tech, and try to have it available to hunters at a fraction of that ridiculous $499 price.
If the idea gets to prototype stage Quentin we might send one up for more test photograpy.

I bought an H7r to replace the H7 a dog thought needed changing. The R is a pile of crap. I liked the older model for an about camp light, small light and could get the week out of the batteries easily, then the dropkicks had to improve it...
For me I always have the brighter light mounted on the rifle as that way I have wiggle room if I can see something with the head mounted.

LED Lenser is a cruel marketing joke. I do have to say that despite the high cost I have been very impressed with the quality of my Zebralight head torches.
