I have a Maxtoch Sniper M24. Has this model been upgraded already?
No - M24 and 2X are current models and likely to remain so for a while.
The standard M24 runs at 3.0 amps and 80-84k lux, and runs 110 minutes on continuous full power with panasonic 3100s.. There is a higher amp M24S version with maybe 90-95k lux spot running at 3.5 amps, but with its extra current draw the M24S will give you lower runtime.

Did more lux testing on couple of dedomed M24s the other night and they rated 167-169k lux - double the lux output of standard lights. This with new meter which reads bit lower than old one. Gadget and I have field tested torches running round 170k with rangefinder and found they were - in very clear conditions - good for picking out big animal bodies with naked eye to 500 yards. So you can happily shoot to 300+ with a reasonable safety margin behind target. And that's a hell of a long way at night! The bigger 2X dedomed runs round 240-250k lux so you'd be looking at 600 yards or so on bodies in clear country conditions.
We've recently given serious thought to new hunter designs for Maxtoch, or upgrades for the M24 and 2X, but after looking at a range of ideas there's really nothing more to develop at present. The M24 is an excellent all-purpose light (combines beam width plus long distance spot, scope mounted or handheld) and ideal at just 270 gms and $80NZ delivered. Dedomed its a wee beauty. And the 400gm 2X runs perfectly as a handheld with its big stock (120k lux) and dedomed (240-250k lux) outputs. Nothing there to tweak as they are already running copper boards/anti-reflective lens tech etc, and any higher amps/outputs means lower batt runtimes.
Next step I think will be an led advancement eg to an XML3 or XPL etc ... in time ....... We would welcome any ideas - key there is that new designs have to have wide market appeal (eg M24 very popular now with law enforcement) and not do exactly same hunter job as M24 and 2X. I put a question on international budgetlightforum (blf) which is where gadget and I source and develop lights over last few years. Here's a recent discussion on a range of poss new lights - mostly tech talk but nothing really new:
New designs from Maxtoch - what lights would you like made? | BudgetLightForum.com
Cheer Mudz it has been dedomed and is a brilliant wee light.
Just heard rumour they improved them

@gadgetman and any other knowledgeable light people... Any knowledge/opinions on the following?? Convoy C8 Cree XML2 U2 1A LED Flashlight, torch, lantern, lanterna bike ,self defense, camping light, lamp, for bicycle-inLED Flashlights from Lights & Lighting on Aliexpress.com | Alibaba Group
Not bad little torch. Heaps of companies make a C8 and they are pretty good value for a rabbit torch.
Bloody good. I guess this one could be de-domed too?
Sure can.
Good wee shottie lights.
Heaps of companies make C8s, they're often of cheaper quality and components often variable. With smaller reflector width mine all tested between 15-32kcd max. Dedome to 35-65ish kcd. Not comparable to maxtochs for power and all purpose performance but they are cheap and useful for the price, and very good on the 12gs at night.
Bit of a lottery as to quality you get but Convoy and Courui some of the best C8 makers.
Thanks for the info.. What sort of usable range would you get after de-dome?
Its hard with C8s because its a generic light, everyone make them, and quality/output varies so much.
Most of our C8s measured 15-24kcd stock, with one exceptional one reading 32kcd. Didn't bother with dedoming but it would lift them to average say 35 - 50kcd. 50-60kcd is certainly great for bunny visibility to 125-150m and bigger animals to 200m. But from our experience C8s did present other problems - eg runtime is alot lower than a 2 x 18650 torch, and some of them (the 32kcd one) had poor heatsinking and heated up so much we could not hold them after 10 minutes.
They're a simple design and very cheap. I gave up on C8s in the end because it was such a lottery as to what quality/power/output arrived at the door. But - try a Convoy and you may be ok - IF it has a SMO (smooth reflector) and not an OP (orange peel reflector). SMO throws light, OP spreads it more.
Very useful wee lights and easy to mod - some people really like them. Good beam for the shottie and at that price if you've got them attached to the bottom of the barrel/tube and the shottie recoil buggers them it doesn't matter too much.
Right, now to find an XM-L2 version WITH a SMO reflector... The only ones I can find so far are either XM-L with smooth reflector or XM-L2 with OP reflector :pissed off:
Did some more lux testing tonight on a couple of Maxtoch lights gadget has just dedomed - a new M24 and a new 2X. They were impressive even shining them on the wall this afternoon, and really lit up the lux meter tonite.
M24 dedomed read 179k lux and the 2X recorded a cracking 256k lux - which is over 1000 meters beam length (down to equivalent of full moonlight).
Took them outside to test (edge of city) and they both easily lit up buildings 400-500m away - even within some city lighting.
Seriously impressed! Bloody hell these things are good - esp when dedomed.
Shit they must be bloody bright!
I have an older maxtoch (dunno the model but before the 2x)
It's beam over powers the M24 when shone on a wall.
It weighs nothing and is just as grunty if not gruntier than the M24.

Your M24 might need a tweak from gadget.
The first batch of the earlier SN6X-2s ran at about 50k lux and the second variant ran at 58-65k lux. Very good lights but M24 should have quite a bit more light on target past 200m.
Gadget man, can I possibly buy one of these tweeked 2x's from you?
I have one of those nitecore p-23 smilodin things that I got for rabbit shooting. Anyone have an ideal set up? I want to not rely on a spotlight but see well out far with good beam length and some flood. Ideally something not too big and I will just carry lots of batteries

I don't sell them but happy to doctor any that folk buy. It only takes few minutes for me to de-dome.

LR - this is the 2X. Just order it and get gadget to dedome it.

I agree with you R93 - my guess would be 98% of night shooting is within 250m so the Maxis do that with a good visibility safety margin behind the target. Gadget reckons he can see ear tags on stock through the scope at night at 400m with M24 dedomed - that's a helluva lot more than I'd shoot.
Thanks for that Mudgripz. I'll buy one of those and send it down to gadgetman for his treatment. What's the story with 18650 battery's. I've got abou 12 ultra fire ones but they must be 3 years old now. I'm guessing I'll probably need some new ones to get the most out of the light. What brands are the go to? Can you post a link to ones I should buy.
Cheers for the help guys, I've crused all the light forums a bit in the past and without spending shit loads of time researching I thought it was all a bit mind boggling.
Heat from underneath and pop the dome. I've done over a hundred and haven't had a failure yet, but have done quite a few replacements where others haven't had the same success.
The petrol soaking seems to be harsh on the phosphorous layer. Most seem to come out dimmer and some with a bluer tint.
2X is a good handheld spottie, M24 is good as scope mounted or handheld. Some use 2X on scope but fairly solid at 440gms. We always dedome XMLs now.
For XML grunters like these best to have top brand 18650 (protected button top) batts with 3100/3400 mAh rating for optimum runtime. Panasonics best. Other good brands samsung, sanyo, nitecore, xtar, orbtronic, maxtoch. Try to get 2600 mAh minimum. Ultrafire batts are crap and their 3000-4000 etc ratings are worthless.
Sweet where do I buy Panasonic ones from then? Do you sell them Mudgripz?
I have an M24 on the way. How do they compare to popular contemporary lights like the LED lenser P 14 & 17?
Whats the trick with using heat? I've been reading a bit on BLF but haven't really found any details on how to do it.. And some of them don't recommend using heat.
Do you use a soldering iron? How long do you apply heat for/how hot do you need to get the LED? I thought excessive heat would melt the solder holding the LED to the PCB?
Sorry about all the questions but I wouldn't like to stuff it up! :P
I use a hot air attachment on a gas soldering iron and heat for about 20-30 seconds. As is heats I press down on the dome with a hollow ground jewellers screwdriver; this tests the softness and when soft enough the edges of the dome lift off the die. Then a gentle lift on the edge opposite the fine connecting wires inside sees the dome just pop off. The solder melting is not an issue as if you hold the pressure on the dome as it cools excess solder will be squeezed out and improve heat sinking. Just clean off the excess. I hold the board in little wooden soft jaws in a vice for insulation.
And could a soldering iron be sufficient heating?
I found that my soldering iron couldn't get the heat in quick enough, it is a fairly fine tip. I have a supply of LEDs.
LR - if you want to buy batts get some off trademe to get started - though they are double the price in NZ. Then maybe order some more from FastTech or Maxtoch and they will come out by surface shipping which is about 2 months. No quick overseas buy for the lithium-ion 18650 batts as they need special safety conditions for international freighting.
That makes sence. Cheers mate.
anderset20 - your Nitecore P-25 Smilodon torch will be ok as a hunter light but only just. It is quite expensive at $70-100US but has low output. Here is its site spec:
" Boasts a peak beam intensity of 20,000cd and a throw distance of up to 283 meters"
This not a performance we'd boast at all - its 1/4 the output of the Maxtoch M24, and 1/6th the output of the 2X for similar price.
Nitcore make good stuff but not really high-performance lights - more all-purpose outdoor stuff. These particular Maxtochs are kiwi hunter designed lights, hot-rodded for big output but still reliable and very well made. Way better value and performance.
Nitecore alright but best bet is ask gadget if he can dedome it for you - its an XML led and should bump up to maybe 40-45k lux. By comparison M24 dedomed is about 170-180k lux.
