    Garmin topo maps, which one?

    Hey all,

I've decided to get a handheld GPS to use instead of my phone and settled on a garmin 66st. It looks good online, heres a fairly typical review in case anyones interested: https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/revie...in-gpsmap-66st

I got a garmin inreach years ago and the topo active maps are rubbish. I don't want to make the same mistake twice of not getting the right maps.

So what are you guys using on your garmin gps units? Topo lite, topo, topo with hema?? There's a lot of marketing results on Google and street/geocachers reviews but not much info on the topo maps themselves.

    Any info appreciated, thanks

    FYI.

I just download the Garmin Custom Maps - .kmz files from the below site and install them into the GPS's custom map directory.

New Zealand Topographic Map - NZ Topo Map

These are basically the Garmin formatted equivalent files of the actual Topo Maps.

If this is the one that gives you the NZ Topo 40 overlay do it. It's brilliant. The garmin mao view is pretty basic contours. With this overlay installed your good to go. The inreach models like Alpha 200 series comes with Birdseye which is like a google earth overview which is useful for open/tops country. You click between both views.

Don't know if this answers your question, but I had this recommended to me a while ago:
    https://www.maptoaster.com/maptoaste...-nz/index.html

Didn't end up using it (was for my motorbike Garmin Montana, and motorbikes are still in UK), but supposed to be very good.
