Thread: Gear Room

Hey guys

Got a spare bedroom I want to use for storing all my hunting and camping gear.
At the moment, it's spread out between my bedroom wardrobe, drawers, storage containers, and racking in the garage, and it's a pain in the ass.

Been looking at racking options with bins and free-standing wardrobes, and will probably go with a combination of both

Has anyone seen or have any legit setups I can get some ideas from?

warehouse used to do a cheap line of steel modular shelving but you would need to anchor it to wall at intervals in case of earthquake - if I had a choice I would make it from ply for the shelves and pine for the framing maybe some macrocarpara Rimu or Matai ( even recycled ) on front to make it all look good - dont forget a bench

I try to keep my outdoor gear all in one place..as I hate when it’s all over the place, and I need to search. Most of the time

I like this option if starting from scratch. Comes in a couple of widths from memory. I used it to build a couple of work areas (desks/shelving) for our kids as well, quite versatile and pretty quick to whip something up. Probably not as cheap as DIY shelving from timber/ply, but took me less than 1/2day to buy and assemble, would've been a few weekend's work to build from scratch.

Got this racking from Mitre10, bunch of large plastic storage bins & set up rail at one end for hanging coats, etc & a few pegs on wall other end for packs.
If I remember right the racking was on sale for $130 ish

Bunnings Rack-it system is modular and strikes a balance between price amd quality. Easy to install and quite a few accessories can be added like hooks to hang stuff from the sides.

bloody classic best joke on here for years

many of you have great set ups me I would like some timber especially with some natural grain - just set the room off in my opinion - like an old English gun room - the subtle grain of oak and mahogany - whiff of youngs gun oil - leather and yesterdays lager

The rack it stuff from bunnings and similar is ideal if it is within budget. If you are like me and would rather spend that money on actual hunting stuff, it could be worth keeping an eye on the likes of the sallies, charity shops and recycling sheds etc....They sometimes have shelf sets, drawers etc and assorted furniture that can do the task for a fraction of the cost and at the same time thereoretically your money goes to helping others instead of helping shareholders....(remember though, shareholders are people too....)

I saw one such set up made from kitchen cabinetry that the colour had gone out of favour with the other half and he did not want to thow it away.....That worked really well. Mixture of cupboards, drawers and a pantry....
