Looking at buying a GPS, either Garmin 62s or Magellan explorist 710 if the Mrs can get them cheap enough. Just after anyone with experience with either with their pros and cons list, and which you would recommend and why.

I have the predecessor (model 60GSX) to the Garmin. Have had it for over a decade. Never missed a beat. Fantastic and extremely robust peice of technology.
Got a 62s the other day, Been in the bush and great coverage no problems getting signal out. SAR use the 60GSX at work and they run sweet to. Topo maps on the 62S is great to, you can match up on the paper map sweet as.
I love the 62S as I went from an old etrex to this.
I have had both the 60csx and the 62s. Great wee units. Gave the 62s to brother-in-law as a little easier to use. I use the 60csx, though still prefer map and compass. Mostly just the map. Even my phone has the entire south island in topo50.
Garmin everytime. Robust and best of all Free GPS maps with NZGPS forum. Can do loads, incl turn it into a car GPS.
I have a touchscreen version Dakota 20. Load all the data, maps, waypoints via Basecamp or Mapsource SW.
Garmin +1
62s is one of the best bits of kit i have invested in. great coverage and easy to use.

The Garmin 62s is hard to beat..... especially with Good Topo maps.
Great resale value too :)

Yeah thats more or less what I figured. Thought maybe if I got the top of the line Magallen it might be a go but will stick with the garmin.
P38 will send it off to you tomorrow. its sitting in my car just been slack. Cheers
I had the old Etrex and upgraded to the 60S, thinking that would be good. However, most times I go to use it in the Motu etc, I can't get a signal, 'cos I'm always scrambing around in some shitty gulley. Even when I get up high, the canopy seems to block the signal a lot of the time. Do I need to invest in a 62S??
Mmmm. Wonder how I can slip that purchase past the financial controller
Just went into pick one up on way to work thinking it was late night Thursday, turns out it wasn't :wtfsmilie:
Stupid night shift and GMT scrambling my brain.
DSE currently has them oon special for $399 up till the 18th, good time to grab one but just make sure you save me one.
Go for a Garmin. Simply for the reason that the good fellas over at nzopen will help you with free maps and upgrades.
Everyone will harp on about the 62 and the 62s, they are good tough units but the user interface is no way as good as the touch screen models like the Oregons imho. They are just not as intuitive to use. The screen resolution isnt as good either. The downside is that these use slightly more battery power and you have to look after the touch screen.

This may be dumb but if you had blood on your hands and it got on the screen and dried up will it still work properly or would you have to take off the screen protector?
Some screen comparison shots from over on the dark side, although the 60 series may have improved since these were taken

Screen protectors:
Amazon.com: Lexerd - Garmin Oregon 550t 200 300 400i 400c 400t TrueVue Anti-Glare GPS Screen Protector: GPS & Navigation
They're just very thin plasticy film things. Peel off the backing, drop them on, they're almost invisible. Leave 'em on there for a year or so. Re-do once the protector gets all scratched up
Ones on my phone last around 4 months.
Yeah, bout right. They start to "curl up" on the edges etc and eventually its time to replace.
4 months is ok on a phone, I guess. But you're using that item every day, unlike a GPS.
Yeah that is true.
Of course you could go for the new(ish) Rino model:

Garmin Rino 650 review
which is the dogs danglies GPS with a UHF radio combined and also allows you to see and text your hunter mate on the screen!
Save me one! Got to wait till smoko to order one.

Faregame
Do you sell screen protectors and hard case (or sft case) covers for Garmin Rino 650?
Cheers
