Thread: Headlamp for the wet slog back to camp?

I'm away for a week - I've again waited till dusk to stake out those clearings, it's now raining, and I need to rely on a headtorch for that nightly bush-bash back to base. I don't need high-lumens, just something that I can depend on (rainproof and take the knocks) and something that won't need a fresh battery/s every outing. Any suggestions? I assume I need to pay $$ for such dependability?

For just walking and in camp ive found those cheap everready ones from the supermarket with two lenses the best. Bright wide beam, the 2 lenses cut down on shadows, and you can see clearly to 15 plus yards. Crap beyond that, but very small and lightfit in a shirt pocket.

Don't piss around with cheap headtorch... Your life can depend on it... Have had a Nitecore hc30 for a while now, and love it... Best thing I have ever purchased! Got it off fastech...

I always have 2. One to wear, and a small spare hand held.

Always carry spare batteries and a second wee torch so you can see to change them.

Check out the battery life per headlamp. I have a LED Lenser H14 and whilst I love the light output, I have learned it can quickly chop a set of batteries on high power.

Yes the appropriate battery is highly relevant too

Led lenser the blue one with rechargeable battery pack, can take AAA as well, has a high water proof rating, higher than the h14s etc

Ive got a Black Diamond Icon. Think it cost me about $120 and I love it. You can swap between red and white light, dimable brightness, takes 4 AA batteries and if you get some rechargeable ones (I think I paid $30 for 4) they last a while, but as others have said always carry spares!.

As for being able to take a knock or two... well within 2 weeks of buying it I was using it at work I dropped from about 8 meters out of a gantry on to a solid concrete flaw. Slight crack in the lens... and that's it. Still works just as good as the day I bought it. Would most certainly recommend it.

remember the old dolphin torches that we all used in wet conditions during the 80s well they make a led headlamp........ and carry a wee torch too,I've got one that uses a single AA that is very waterproof, why I carry both is during misty/foggy conditions a headlamp is worse than headlights on high beam,a torch carried in hand down low works better in these conditions.

As I've lost confidence in the "separate battery pack" type (my old Black Diamond has been repaired twice with faulty wire issues), the Nitecore and the Armytek type look good. Any issues with that type of torch being accidently turned on when in bottom of daypack?,

I have a bunch of Fenix lights all running 18650 batteries which are rechargeable and they have never let me down.

One of these mate, Maxtoch H01, single 18650 battery, three intensity settings and a red light. Nice grunty centre spot (not super tight) and a massive area of throw outside of that. I'm pretty happy with it so far. $36usd and free delivery

no issues so far.
