Right you Kuiu decorated brand bashers with too much money, what do you recommend in their range? Is it superior gear to our local designed in nz made in China brands?
I've got a bit of their gear and like it for light weight and warmth. After looking at skre gear from rugged ram outdoors at the sika show I'm going to try that. NZ company but make in USA quality looks good and jackets are longer in the body. Kuiu is a bit short in the body as they wear matching pants. Price is better than kuiu and nz freight. On special atm up to 30%off.
I go for branded stuff too.

American company. Made in China. I wouldn't get hung up on the made in China thing these days though they can make shit as good as anywhere just depends what the company doing the ordering want and how they police the quality. The worst stuff is the companies that offer warranties but just throw away any warranty claims and give you a whole new item.. cough couch vortex..
For the most part I believe it’s definitely better. Every item is subjective though to the individual. I have a fair bit and really like it but some items I either didnt or go with something else. I wouldn’t buy the merino base layer stuff again, fragile as hell and not that good imo. Use macpac instead for cheaper. I don’t use the rainwear, mainly because it’s expensive as hell and I don’t like short jackets (kiwi thing). I have two packs, they are damn expensive but bloody good. I have a few mid layers, all good. Friggin love the attack pants. Best pants i’ve ever had. Also have the kutana pants, very nice too. Yukon gaiters have been very good but the kutana gaiters are too light and get damaged too easily. Love the bino harness. I had an axis jacket, it was very nice but I personally didn’t like the athletic fit and how I couldn’t comfortably wear a puffer an all my layers under it. For an active outer shell it was very good though. I like the expedition gloves.
Kuiu clothes are made in Vietnam. The mid layers, attack pants and soft shell jackets are good.
Merino base layers, rain wear and puffers are too pricey compared to quality alternatives

I brought abit of there stuff and most is pretty dam good but I brought a Wear on Earth puffer instead of a Kuiu in fact I brought 2 one full on winter one and another lighter weight with smaller baffles bloody good and cheap.
Also just got a Earth Sea Sky rain coat another kiwi made dam good product.
Kuiu peleton mid layers are great and I just got a Rubicon jacket also very good.
There pack are top notch as well and everything has a great warranty

I got the super down puffer too, expensive but it’s great. Oh and the mountain star tent which is bloody awesome.
I do like the look of that mountain star!
Tent is good, pack is good but can be frustrating if you aren’t used to straps, I love the merinos so differ from the above, kennai jacket I like, attack pants are good, had a chugach rain jacket, currently have a Sitka, might get another Kuiu one
Yeh good discounts on the tents.
Are these Kuiu knock offs or the real deal?

I have had or have most Kuiu items. Like Stagstalker says thier Attack pants are the most comfortable pants I’ve ever worn. I wear them every week and love them.
The next thing I’d get is thier mid layer Peleton 240 jacket. Lighter than the Guide jacket, which is pretty good too, I take the 240 on all my hunts.
The Storm Star is the bees knees of tents, a little heavier than some tents but bomb proof and has some pretty neat design features.
One thing that I thought was a bit unnecessary for NZ but love is thier puffer pants, full zips and synthetic fill. So good in the mornings and around camp. If you hunt in cooler climates they’re a really luxury.
Finally I love there gaiters, I can walk up creeks and keep my boots dry when my mates get wet. I have the Kutana gaiters. Whilst there’s a temptation to buy the heavier Yukon gaiters, I don’t like the under boot strap on them. I’m not sure how long the Kutana gaiters would last if you thrashed them, as they’re lightweight, but as I wear my attach pants all the time, I just wear the gaiters in water.
Gloves are pretty good too…
😀
As others say the attack pants have been awesome where I also bought a second pair for casual wear.
I found the lighter 120 merino too light where I’ve worn some holes in my one, I bought a 145 which is a bit thicker and more sturdier to my needs.
I had a guide jacket but found it to be more of a shell garment but it was good for being windproof and light rain but I switched to a strong fleece 260 which does all of the above but also keeps me warm. I’m about to order the next model up being the 275 strong fleece cause it’s a jacket and not a pullover like the 260 I have.
Craigc, interesting comments re your gaiters, I have a pair of Yukon’s which I found to be a huge step up from the stony creek and huntecs I used to wear, certainly stronger, lighter, more waterproof and just bomb proof and like you I wasn’t too keen on the under boot strap but found it didn’t cause me any issues and that strap material is amazingly tough with no signs of wear.
I wouldn’t mind buying a pair of puffer pants but for the time being the price tag puts me off.
I have their carbon frame pack system and it's an epic piece of kit. Gotten realy pricey in recent years though. Also shifty that they aren't allowing Nz'ers to get the rifle scababrd/strap due to some BS regulation as none were available at the time I got my pack and I javelin tried twice to buy one to no avail.
Have the Binocular harness as well and love it, just wish it had a couple of small internal pocket along the sides like the Sitka one does, handy for pocket knifes and lens pens.
Borrowed a mates Kennai jacket for a recent winter tahr hunt. Was fantastic to hunt in, even active stuff, which I usually sweat like a mofo doing I wasn't, so really breathable. Warm as and I lived in it most of the trip. Got home an purchased my own on sale a couple of months ago.
To make use of the flat rate for shipping its always worth grabbing a couple of tees and hats as well.

@Bryan, how compact does the kenai squash down?
Pretty sure Kiuiuieue socks are made right here in NZ - NZSockCo in mighty Ashvegas.
I refurbished my translators motorbike for her at the end of our 6 month project in Vietnam: 2 new tyres, 2 new inner tubes, new starter motor, new master cylinder for front brakes, new brake pads all around. Cost: $12.50 USD.:P
Anyone making stuff in Vietnam is killing it in regards to wages and production costs in poor old NZ
Between kuiu and first lite, what’s your preferences? In term of comfort, not fancy camo. ( I have sexy kuiu verde painted bow :-)
I was looking for a pair of light down pants and not wanting to pay kuiu prices. There are some good lower cost options about now. Montbell do light down and synthetic options at less than half price of K.

Was stoked to get the Northridge rain jacket at 50% off -- don't think I'd ever pony up for it at full price. Have been shopping around for a good rain layer for a while.
Really well @Seventenths I'll post a picture if it tucked into its hood when i get home tonight.
Here is the Kennai rolled up into its hood, with a pen sitting on top to help with scale. I will compact down further if stuffed into a pocket or whatever but for its warmth and features it packs down pretty good!

Bloody good pens, those. ^
Just ordered my first Kuiu gear so thanks for the heads up @Matt2308
My Kenai jacket fits into a 4 litre dry bag. Rolled down a bit.
I was just in the middle of ordering a few things and the sale time must have ended. It suddenly did a refresh and all the prices went up..
Fucking shitty I reckon when it’s in the cart and you’re making payment…
Yes they are rather like Brisco’s in that respect.
As to the gear, can only reiterate what the others have said, bloody good stuff.

My Kenai Jacket. I leave it in my lack like this.
I also have the Kenai pants. Once you try puffer pants you’ll be hooked!
I'm glad I made my order before the sale ended however my credit card isn't looking too healthy but I know the gear is solid and it'll last me a long time as opposed to other brands.
CraigC, that's not what i wanna hear in regards to the puffer pants! :D
Kuiu, the "Gucci of Hunting Clothing". It cracks me up how they can market, with a straight face, might I add, "no retailer mark up". Just had a look (post sale) at a pair of shorts for a laugh, NZD$177. I don't know what shorts sell for in the States, but Hunters Element/Swazi/Huntech $39-$89. Will the camo (I guess you have to use the right camo pattern of the 3 or 4 they offer for the particular hunt, and I assume used with the complete Kuiu head to toe system) make me invisible? Really. I admire what Jason Harrington achieved both with Sitka and Kuiu, amazing the power of brand. Good kit there, no doubt, but other brands produce amazing gear, particularly in the backpack space, particularly under weight (Stone Glacier and Exo come to mind). So do your research before spending your hard earned USD.
