try a few different types of scope on your rifle particulaly if you are a bush hobbit and most shots will be up close n personal....you SHOULD be able to close your eyes throw rifle up to shoulder and when you open eyes be pretty mush lined up through scope, like using a well fited shotgun. I own a nice bolt action .308 and tried two different 3x9x40mm scopes on her and yes it worked well and yes I shot animals with it but it just didnt feel quite right.....I then tried an old M8 4X loopy and holy smoke Batman she is a completely different beast now, comes up like a wet dream... oh and while on subject of scopes unless you are out hunting open country and going to be shooting past say 500 yards regulary you DONT NEED a super huge heavy 6-126 power scope.....yes its nice to be able to zoom in a bit more for the longer resting shots (used 9x on pig at 150ish yards yesterday) but in reality you can shoulder shoot big game all day long happily with no more than 4x maybe 6 if out in open....guys did it for years and years before vari powers got more reliable, the theory that fixed power scopes had less to go wrong still holds true today.
