    Shooting sticks

Ive been thinking a shooting stick might be useful to steady my aim, as I like to take a walking pole with me anyway. Can the likes of the trigger stick also be used as a walking pole or would they not take the weight?

I use the trigger stick tripod you’ll get more stability outve a tripod over a pole but you can tie the legs together with the attached rubber bit so could use it like a pole in that set up

You can easily DIY the 4stablesticks. Very popular in UK. Plenty of youtube tutorials.

    Anyway.....

You blokes must be on a mission to fu*k your backs, some of the gear you seem to carry.

I have a cheap trigger stick I bought about 3 years ago. Never used it, weighs 1.6kg.

A bloke was recently proudly showing off his new and very expensive tripod to me. Must have weighed at least 3kg, no thanks!

I love sticks short and long. I always carry a set of folding shooting sticks for sitting that weigh 104grams. Bloody light, made from carbon fibre arrows.

    To the point.
Pictured are my longer walking shooting sticks. I've been using these for about a year now if I’m going for a walk with the rifle and consider a shot a chance.

When closed (as shown) they are shoulder high and with the yoke inserted act as a walking stick and a mono pole for shooting off. Better than off hand not as good as a tripod.
If I untie the red string and remove the yoke (with practice pretty fast & probably faster than the 4stablesticks) I have a set of traditional shooting sticks about nipple high, a touch low but work fine for standing shots Weight 325grams. And unlike the 4stablesticks, height adjustable by opening or closing the legs.

Made from TV arial alloy tubing, but any 8 or 12mm aluminum tubing would do the job tho. Even 12mm dowel.
Originally I used a DIY yoke but you can buy them over the net.

This is the knot I use: https://youtu.be/G64HAnphLwU?

I have a couple of these.
Very good if you have new or less competent shooters.
And great if you can't get prone for any reason.
Plenty of cheap but serviceable knock offs on Aliexpress.
There's also a five stick version which is like shooting off a bench.

    Thanks all.

I think I was a bit ambiguous in my initial question - what I really want to know is if the shooting sticks work well as a walking pole too, or if they are too unwieldy or maybe fragile? Im imagining that the bipod, tripod and quad sticks become increasingly more cumbersome the more legs they have, although obviously better to shoot off. Most of the designs Ive seen lack a decent wrist strap (essential on a walking pole) which suggests thats not their intended use.

Take one walking pole, drop the tip in your trigger-hand pocket (right, for righthanded shooters) and hold the pole with the same hand that is holding the fore-end of the stock. Surprisingly stable (more so than leaning into your sling), can be done with any old stick of manuka too. There's a youtube video somewhere demonstrating it but I can't find the blasted thing.
