Kathmandu prices are mental. Even with sale reductions.
Check that the "limit" is lower comfort, not extreme.
Heavy synthetic bag, I would save a bit more and get down.
Bivouac has sale on Sea-to-Summit Trek 3 bags
Phillip. The -13 will be the extreme rating but this will be a way better bag than your current three season and for less than the price of taking a librarian out to dinner. Mind you the librarian would get you hotter but perhaps for a shorter time
Do you reckon 160 is paying too much ebf?
I had a look at those Sea-to-summit down ones and even though it would be great to have a down bag its just out of my price range - the part-time wages of a student don't go too far :P
I had a look and the limit is lower comfort, the t-extreme (as they call it) is -34
I found this on the bivouac site
Marmot Trestles 15 Synthetic Sleeping Bag - Sleeping Bags
About the same by the looks of it
Duly noted. While they seem like a good idea, they are always end out being more expensive in the long run :ORLY: Plus they don't pack down as small in my bag :wtfsmilie:
If you scroll down you can see the temp rating in more detail, it says:
"T-comfort -6
T-limit -13
T-extreme -34
T Extreme is a survival only rating for a "standard" adult woman. This is an extreme survival rating only and it is not advisable for consumers to rely on this rating for general use. The best guideline temperatures for purchase decisions are the T Comfort and T Limit ratings.
T Limit is based on the lowest temperature at which a "standard" adult male is deemed to be able to have a comfortable night's sleep.
T Comfort is based on a "standard" adult woman having a comfortable night's sleep."
Phillip, it's a reasonable price, but synth bags are heavy and bulky.
I steer away from Kathmandu, anybody selling "technical" gear with color as a major choice, is a bit suspect :D
Take a scale and weigh stuff in the store, Bivouac is normally pretty accurate, Macpac slightly more than advertised weight, and Kathmandu - yeah right.
For similar price, I would go with Marmot. Std looks about 200g lighter (allegedly)
Other thing to check is bag sizes compared to your body shape. Around 80cm shoulder width is quite small for me, but if it is a winter bag then snug is not a bad thing.
Escapade 700 (Standard Size) | Travel | Sleeping Bags | Macpac
$100 more, 1.2 kg, much better deal.
I use the 500 as a summer/spring bag
Looks like a nice bag and not too much more expensive for the down is ideal, but don't you think -3 lower limit is a bit warm? I have a summer bag and I'm looking for something that can really keep me warm in the winter.
Good call on making sure it fits nicely. I'm 6'2" so tall but not a giant and I'm pretty slender so not worried about it being too small around, but that said, don't want to be swimming in it.
Ring macpac silverdale ask what they have in stock they had some cheap clearance bags there a couple weekends ago.
That is generous of you Mucko
Thanks for the offer mucko! Like Rushy said, its very generous. I won't be able to do any great deal of saving until summer (when I'm off uni) and by that time I'll be using my summer weight again. So I think I'll just bite the bullet and go for this one. Thanks nevertheless.
How's your new place going? You mustn't be long until you get your GSP from broadbents too aye?
When you get freed up we should go for a hunt
Make a wish list for Summer i will swap you some milkings for some gear you want. i am fast running out of time for a hunt my 2IC has a rele thats going to show me some winter spots. Yeah i expect to hear from broadbent soon. i may get away every other weekend. text me when you keen will see how it works out.
Just bought a domex bushlite which should do the job. Anyone had any experience with them?
Was looking at a fairydown scorpion that was brand new and only $300 but missed out.
I'm going to head out to sylvia park on thursday where they have a bivouac store and a kathmandu store and I'll size the two up and buy one them
yeah mate its an older model before ownership or what ever changed.
710 loft gsm
comfort temp -14 to -19
Hopefully does the trick
If like me you are a bit concerned about loss of insulation when damp gets into a down bag, you may be interested in this.

Not sure if any NZ supplies yet, but a bloody good price ex states.
FCO have some pretty good gear. Got a black wolf summer weight from their parent company while in australia and they do have some very good quality stuff and reasonably priced and have a club card that you can get very good discounts with.
