Yeah, that method works well if it is someone you are familiar enough with but they may be grumpy buggers at the best of times. There are plenty of other signs to watch out for though and you do notice the changes and some do react differently. Watch for clumsiness, slurring, even going quiet. Had the Mrs start to go hypothermic on me up on the exposed tops in Nelson lakes before we got hitched. Have had it myself too.
I was practically a drunkard, a shivering, stumbling drunkard who couldn't put together a good sentence. I was close to shelter, got inside a warm room and drank a lot of hot water. Recovered after a few hours then had to rest the day. Horrible feeling.
