Hi All,
Got myself a 20g Yildiz yesterday, so I'm looking to stock up on ammo...
For those who shoot 20g...What chokes and shot size are you using for upland?

Pete, Rio have a Game C20, 28gr, 23/4...
Welcome to the Y bangers!
I've had awesome success with #4 and #5 fiocchi this year on ducks and geese
Have a slab of federal #7.5 for pigeons pheasants havent used it on them yet so cant say how it'd go
RC 7.5 trap ammo, any decent 28-32 load in 5-6's for the roosters
7.5...great for birdscaring on the vineyard, but pheasants? I use 6s with my 12g, hares do not like them any more than pheasants do...I find the Eley really suits my gun with consistent spreads so I would not be changing to any other...
Pete, I am always basically lost when it comes to chokes...I use the top barrel first cos you lift the gun instinctively, then the bottom barrel...but I talk to other people and they use the bottom first...:) I would rather a spread on the top, with a tighter choke on the bottom...just my idea, and it is probably completely wrong...but for me it works and I guess that is the crux of the matter:D
Are any of the above in 3inch magnums? I can't seem to find 3inch anywhere around the 1oz weights...
Pheasants die easy. I used 7s in a 12g
I use bottom barrel first top last with the tightest choke. My theory is the sight should be more accurate with the top barrel so I take the second shot with tghter choke at the further range. The old bikal 12g with fixed chokes ia full choke top 3/4 bottom bottom barrel first. Gyess I got use to it and set up my Yildiz to follow
Nope. 2 3/4 for me 28gram. I had my doubts but if 28grams kills a goose it'll kill any other bird
Farmlands but costly there
Got the slab of federal from guncity for $120 a they have free shipping. Worked out cheap
My son runs an M2 in 20g Benelli with mod choke and beats me hands down with an M1.The 20g is quicker and we believe a beat killer especially on pheasants. The 12g looks like a cripple when they are fired together.Using lead.
Pete never put a 3 inch in your 20g. you may as well get a twelve otherwise.
Where the 20 really sings is in the light loads. I use nothing bigger than a 1oz (28g) load for everything, only the shot size changes. #5 for main duties, fezzins and ducks, #7s or #8.5 in 21gr trap loads for quail. and #3 shot in 1oz loads for Canada geese. Job done
Pointer, why would you not use 3" magnums say in a 20g...? I am curious as I am considering getting a 20g...
If you want to throw more shot, use a twelve! The 20 really shines in lighter loads. You will find they pattern better
Pete as for chokes, what my Y - banger does with 1/4 and 1/2 my Miroku does with skeet and 1/2. each gun is an individual. time at the pattern board with chosen load and chokes is the only way
Chokes 1/4 and 3/8. Usually either use 7/8oz of 7's or Winchester Super Pheasant 1 1/4 copper plated 5's (a gold plated load in more ways than one) depending on location
I use the 2 most open chokes that came with mine. The ammo was way too tight with the full choke.
I had the chokes with 3 and 4 bars today which I believe is the IC and Mod with #6 28g... Missed a rooster at about 25/30 yards, the dog was not happy...
If I get a chance next week I'll pattern the gun with #5, #6 and #7s...
Jim how come you wouldn't put 3 inc in the 20g?
1bar is the tightest choke and 5bars is the most open choke.
eley hi flyer 30 gram 5,s for longer pheasants fiocchi trap 7s over the dog 9,s for quail upland i just leave the imp cyl in and if i miss them twice with the sevens the eleys are probably giving half choke patterns out of the quarter choke. if i get away 3 shots on quail the first 2 will be 9,s , 7.5s after that 3 inch 20 gauges only use in on flaring geese[fiocchi 2s or winchesters super pheasant load in cooper plated american 4,s our 3,s] otherwise it defeats the purpose of the 20 in the first place.most used load would be gamebores,2 3/4inch 30 gram in 4,s and 5,s only cos i cant get 6.s
used 3inch magnum loads in a franchi raptor on ducks for a bit of a change..... was an excellent combo
a 3 inch magnum fired in a lightweight 20g would be frightening, at both ends.
Makes me cringe when fathers buy their sons a nice light 20g (great choice) and then buy the heaviest loads they can thus making the gun boot more than the 12g which is precisely what they were trying to avoid :(
Pete the reason is outlined above. You have a twelve, if you need a bigger load of shot (which you don't for upland, your 20 will do it all) use the 12, it will do it better.
For most game shooting I have never used anything more than a half choke in the second barrel, you will find that a revelation coming from a commie gun haha!
RIP mr Bikal
hell no Toby...I'm keeping that tank...
If I ever come across a nice piece of walnut I might do a DIY project and build a stock for it for the sake of keeping myself busy.
The gun itself its in a pretty mint shape, and you wouldn't get that much if you sold it anyways....
I'll keep it as a back up gun. or my father can use it next year hopefully...
Or I'll just take it to Macedonia and shoot buck shot with it on driven boar. Baikal back there is like the Beretta in the western world... LOL
My brother uses the old u/o bikal now. Suits him and his midget arms.
She's loose as though aye @Pointer been around a bit that one :D

Hull all is the manufacturer . Shot mostly ducks so far and seems to hit real hard . Use it on quails too . Would be interested if anyone else has used it ? Pretty sure it was $130 a slab . I'll definitely get some more.
let me just bend my neck a bit annddd....

Ahh yes fabric wad 70mm 30grams #5 20gauge. much better :D
for quail,i use 24 gm 7.5 shot, if it is handy, mai mai supplies are excellent. pheasants i use 6's and 24gm load.with a 20 ga. you do not want to use too big a shot as it is important to keep density of pattern. same with 3 inch loads, i never use them, all you get is a longer shot string, not the same pattern and a lighter wallet.these are very effective loads on my 20 ga. guns.if you want to shoot heavy loads go back to a 12 ga. personally i avoid shooting anything heavier than 30gms through a side by side(12 ga.). no need to, and bad for gun, who wants cheek slap and bruised fingers? many high pheasants shot in the uk are 12ga
1oz. loads,- they are a killer.
if you can find it mythos 5's or 6's.
would have to be the best load i have ever used for roosters.
@gqhoon says the same, pity I can't find any?
If you can find it, B&P Mygra 31gr in 5.5's are great, every bit as good as Mythos......and just as slow it would seem. B&P Flash 28gr 5's for something quite a bit faster.
Used a bit of steel 24gr 7's yesterday on pigeons to good effect, so going to try some on Pheasants next trip.
anybody trying out the 20 gauge black cloud upland lead load if so what you payin for it??
No but I brought one box of the Black Cloud Steel load. Gave it away when I decided against putting it thru my nice light 20g u/o.
From memory was 50 bucks for the box. Guy I gave it to said it worked real good and very very effective but just not economic if you are using big volumes eh.
I don't generally now use anything bigger than 5 shot and mostly 6s or 7.5 as you don't need the bigger sizes shooting upland over a pointy dog. Shots are close eh :)
Gave away all my boxes of 4's to some one down Mid Canty way. Better suited to the area
yea that was me mikee thank you again and ive gone thru most of it on parries geese and ducks
ive got a couple of boxes of prairie storm 2 3/4 inch 1 ounce ''flightstopper lead 6,s to try out,
speed is 1350ftps. was swayed by the shotsize and speed more than he rest of the hype:D
supposed to be warmer tomorrow so a avo wander could be quaily
I brought some parrie 3" #4's to see what they're like. The one thing I already dont like is the price
