ok here goes...... the wee .410 is much more sensitive to shot sizes than other guages...none of mine have shot #5s worth a damn. the 3" shells have 1/2 as much pellets again as the 2 1/2" its half oz versus 3/4 oz #4 and #6 are both worth a crack.the winchester loadings are ALWAYS good. be aware there are brands of 2 1/2" out there that have LESS THAN 1/2oz of shot in them so are pretty anemic.
pattern what ever you get...nothing more off putting for young fella than firing heaps of shots and hitting stuff all.
weve taken everything up to and including wallabies and canada geese with the wee gun over the years.
psssst its the rio that has smallest quantity of shot....wink wink
Buy a couple of boxes and pattern them. Winchester is definitely the best as far as killing goes, number 6 shot gives you a reasonbly dense pattern for a 410.
If you chose a 410 because its lighter and easier for a kid to swing the magnums will prove an unpleasant suprise recoil wise in my experience.
Yes good point, the 3inch shells out of our wee single shot rossi knocks the young fella around.
Thanks guys, yeah don't want to sour him first time out. Remember dad got me a 20ga when i was about ten. shot a wounded dad on the water put me on my arse never forget the old man and his mate laughing there heads off. Then the old man had a shot and goes to his mate shit its got a boot, boots more then my gun(12ga)
yep the ducklings dad
Had a look at couple guns in the weekend, one had a hammer and it was freakin hard to cock and even to break open. The other was one of those yildiz which the boy found easier to shoulder. I was hoping a yildiz would come up second hand but now with sending guns just about easier to buy new.
we found the winchester 1 1/2" in #4 shot would pattern BETTER than a 3" load of #6s when you start loading for the wee gun you find most wads are for 1/2oz of shot which may explain why....its vital to pattern a .410.....
I’ve got no expert knowledge of how it works but it does the job
I shoot multigauge Skeet with my Blaser F3 and a Briley sub gauge set ( the short ones not the full length )
If you point it in the right place the clay is destroyed.
I had to play with the Chokes to get it really working well though .
The 410 needs 1/2 choke and the 28 gauge light moderfied , the 20 and 12 are Skeet Chokes
inserts....elcheaphos are only chamber length long and they pattern off the .12ga barrel but velocity will be poor as no barrel length to gain it....make insert 12" long and it works a treat. only fired one shot in anger from my .410 insert but the rabbit at 20 yards got peppered just fine n dandy.pellets through n through so velocity must be ok.
if the books have it correct you get about 1" of spread per yard....a barrel is nearly a yard long so the 410 shot will be collecting barrel of .12ga and be bumped back into tighter pattern...my old redneck adaptor patterned really well at 25 yards through .12ga full choke.
I got the young fella a 410 yesterday will take him out today and have a shot with it
No problem have found them have had an excuse to clean up cabinet.
PM me and will get them to you

shoot a few sixes this arvo, first shot was a magpie couldn't help myself, then my boy shot at a few pine cones targets just to get him used to shooting it and what its about. On the way home i spotted a cat sunning him self on the river bank so he got shot aswell. went around to the other side and couldn't find him. Boy enjoyed him self, will get him out again this week and shoot a bit more. Cant see him really getting the swing of things straight away but he will enjoy him self this season.
The English did a lot of shot size testing on 410.
No6 gives the best patterns accross all hull lengths, four ten, four long and mag
strangley enough none of my .410s really shone with 6s....each gun is different. Bill Axbey in his book "the bird hunters" sings praises of on open choked gun using #8s....at the sub 25yard range where the wee gun shines it makes sense.
winchester sell a good clay target load of #9s that would do at a pinch....as said earlier be aware there are 2 1/2" shells with LESS than half n oz of shot in them....
I have always considered the 410 an experts gauge not a beginners. But I admit that at around age ten some kids find even a 20 gauge hard to hold.
stick to 25yards and its a great wee gun..... the insert will be coming with me opening weekend for my daughter to use finishing off woundies from the boat.our son got so good at doing it with a baikal .410 we didnt even bother trying to do so with the .12s....home loads, mixture of #6/7/8s in a 3" hull 3/4ox loads not too hot.
if you do reload for the wee gun buckshot is piece of piss to do and really honks along...
@Micky Duck does multiple shot sizes effect the pattern at all? I've always wondered how that would work out.
well it worked....for a positive way.I figured the heavier stuff would do the work and the smaller stuff help fill in the pattern... duplex loads were all the rage at one stage.
