It's 1 hen for the 2nd and 3rd of May. Whats the big deal?
Is the duck pond at Cornwall Park in Hastings classed as a preserve?
If so I'm down there tagging the place for myself.
No deeks required there either just a loaf of stale bread. ;)
Cheers
Pete
the big deal istoby with struggling gamebird populations you dont shoot the females ie the yanks with hen mallard limits and the rest of the world with wild pheasant populations.only commercial shoots/preserves shoot hens no other counttry allows shooting of wild hen pheasants because its stupid, self defeating and has been the tradition that hens are sancrosanct for ever and a day:pissed off:
a\ you cant tag preserves they,re private:D b] if they let you shoot ducks remember your amx/mastercard/visa:pissed off:Quote:

pretty hard to tell the diff with some of our hybrids especially in low light impossible with greys
I doubt there's many people that would go after pheasants on opening to shoot a hen anyway. Over reacting for nothing imo
ohhhh pheasants that is weird
This is an interesting matter re the hen pheasants...a rooster can tend to a maximum of say six or so hens (in the wild)...then there are the 'barren' hens (which tend to be of a lighter colour than the nesting ones)...these will put nesting hens off their nests...so if the population warrants it, why not have a bag for them...the way I see is that when there is an imbalance of the sexes, by natural attrition you are not going to get a greater population...vis a vis, it is pretty much a fallacy and as @gsp follower mentions, the concept of the hens being sacrosanct is so positively Victorian in its relevance.
see your comparing the poms with us the poms have always shot hens cos thier birds are stocked.
in a wild situation not one country in the worlds wildlife managers allow the taking of hen pheasants.
toby if your the young fella that aint been out much i,l forgive your lack of forethought.
if not i think i,l stick with the thinking of every american canadian and other countries wildlife managers who say the shooting of wild hen pheasants is bordering on wild pheasant hunting suicide.
Yeah Mate
They will be as fat as a fat thing on their fattest day. :P:)
And tender as.
All the little kids in town and the Nanas across the road feed them up everyday.
Only trouble is I recon that the Nanas will instantly spot one or two missing and be onto to you straight away. :(
The Ducks probably all got names that they answer too.
Cheers
Pete
Sorry @gsp follower your right.
I apologise.
I get side tracked sometimes.
Cheers
Pete
I've been out enough to know that 1 hen pheasant a day for 2 days of the whole season wont do diddly squat considering there will be next to no one that will go out after the one hen anyway.
More hens probably get shot from the kids running around with slug guns than what will be shot on opening weekend.
What you say confirms the new ruling to be stupidly inappropriate then doesn't it.
no they,l still be able to hunt cocks at the same time but the point is how many give up on ducks and go for a pheasant and now having the option of a hen ??Quote:

Talked to them yesterday they said it was done so kids that go out would be able to bag a pheasant. I response was then why not in brackets next to it (kids only)

shit did everyone but me know boggy creek a local f&g owned management area has been sold to doc??
apparently f&g will still ''manage the ballots and such:(
i would have thought cock would kill other cocks if there were to many competing but tpo many hens in a new one on me.
obviously not kiwi male pheasants who like us believe there no such thing as to many adoring females.
i was more referencing your victorian quote which to me represented the times of the big stocked keepered massive brace kills.
This is part of a process of acceptance. Eastern Region with a pheasant limit of 5 cocks has been doing something right. Why change it?
Most of us have managed to shoot a cock as our first pheasant, which- although may prove difficult initially brings about a real sense of achievement when it occurs- like anything earned. My guess this is more about changing a culture, not the actual shooting of wild hen birds.
I suspect you are entirely correct, @Tim Allen...there is a sound rationale behind protecting hens WHERE THERE IS A SMALL/SPARSE POPULATION...lucky ones who can bag hens as well...there must be some birds up there...
]i wonder if you set a hen as well as cock limit do you then encourage to some extent the if it flys it dies mentality??
well a hen maybe a feed a cocks a feed a trophy and a hard flushing, cackling, nappy change producing ,gaudy son of a bitch, that i love to hate then love again:yaeh am not durnk:
this depending on the hunt the dogs work my shooting the birds condition colouring:D
just hard to get excited about killing a hen after 39 years of bieng told hell no.
dont get me started on pointed and flushed quail :ORLY:
how is it possible to miss as often as i do a bird not much bigger than a bull sparrow with 300 odd pellets at 30 feet??christ last season i barely kept myself in roast quail and veges including at least two trips to the gunshop for more 9,s:O_O::D

In Hawkes Bay we are permitted two roosters a day...
How many did YOU get Tony, with that slug gun, tuis, Kereru, Ruru oh the list goes on!:O_O:
thats how i got this male phezzy he got clipped by a car south of rakaia on state hwy one poor sod. i thought he might be nursed back to health but when he couldnt move the next day i new his time was up:oh noes:http://i1046.photobucket.com/albums/...mage0123-1.jpg
I hunt from one side of eastern to another, I don't see the need to shoot hens. The population is healthy but not that healthy - I certainly won't be shooting a hen. However its only one weekend, I can't see it making much difference if it's this year only
