    Don't know about the short fly thing.
    Used to see a lot of them on the coast. Did the odd puke drive too. No they wont fly as far as a duck but they can and will fly a long way if they have to.

    About once a year we get a puk that's flown over to Stewart Island. Closest point from South Is to Stewy is 21 k's.
