Getting keen now.Attachment 273432
This just got me keen all over again !
New spot for us this year. Excited would be a massive understatement ! Just did the first full strip on my Beretta 1301 comp and then function tested it with some lead at the range. Decoys rigged, just need to wait till the Friday morning to bang on a big roast of mutton leg for Fri and Saturday night. Then also put on a leg of lamb for lamb baps. Just about there!
Yeah well I have a few nightshifts to do before the big day too,so will be two if not three sleeps per day with them.... But you knew what I meant. Beautiful sunny day up here beside lake ruataniwha right now.life is great.
Only thing left is to grab 2 box's of 2s for the geese.
I'll just grab some gamebore magnum steel 32gr 2s.
That'll do the trick I reckon.
Not long now, birds have been absent around our district few numbers starting to build on the manawatu, hopefully back for the season!
My spirit will be with you , duck shooting for 62yrs but not now able but still get excited for the 1st weekend in May .
Good luck to you all.
First duckshooting since I moved back in 2016 that I'm missing.
Just not getting out enough for the price of the license.
Last couple have been opening only.
Basically a camping trip with good people and a little shooting but costs me an extra 100 odd bucks for the privilege
Yeah, just opening weekend makes price per duck a lot. I try to get out often over season really intend to do lots more this season.elesmere has always interested me and fine fellow has made invite. My old dog is past retrieving duties so I shall plonk her in canoe and paddle her around wainono for a day as I did for our old cocker spaniel. Poppy is three so she needs lots of work. Game on.
Eight more sleeps yah ha ha ha( in best count homogenised voice)
Started when I was 5, sitting in a Mai Mai with my father, picking up his spent paper CAC cartidges and sniffing them. Havent missed an opening day since (turned 71 this year). Still shoot in the same spot over 'big water ' on the Kaipara.
Seven. Fed pond again today,no birds exited but all grain eaten. Dozen parries were in flight by main farm pond.not sure where mallards are today.
I think there must be a strong family influence in whether a man becomes a duck shooter or not. No one in my family (grandfather’s and father’s generation) was into it and as a result I have never done it (and nor to my knowledge have any of my brothers or cousins). Mind you, my old man was a “knife over dogs” pig hunter and I have never done that either so maybe the family influence doesn’t always impact.
Have access to easy local pond but gonna head back to public lake in huntly again for opening morning shoot with my duck shooting mate of 35yrs and my 13yr old son, camp Friday night, couple of bourbons ,good catch up and a decent camp fire, boats, motors, good mate who I see 2-3times a year,my son,few dogs and hard shooting are what my opening is all about it turns out, will shoot the easy local pond on Sunday..good luck and stay safe team!
It gets worse every year. The fever never dies just gets stronger

A little fine tuning for Dash - we're ready.
Six I muttered as woke up this morning. Just as well wife was already out of bed or it may have resulted in her elbow or knees repelling perspective boarders lol.
Bloody forecast is looking great for fishing...
That's normal, whereas today...

West, sou west for us. Gusting to 35km/h on Saturday.
That's better!
Huntly will be fine and clear with ducks at 10000ft or so foggy you can’t find the maimai out in the lake..
F f f f f f five ....decoys all sorted, battery for splasher, flasher on charge, spionzilla and others take AAs so they sorted( oh so much easier idea). Great sleep last night.last night shift tonight, hopefully fog stays away.
Forecast has some wind in it. Hurray.
Flocked two doz. decoys over summer, so I am keen to see how they go. Was a lot of fun making the electrostatic flocker. Kept this retired bloke busy, and was fun watching the eye rolls from the Mr's. as the lawn sprouted decoys everywhere, and overspray from the paint cans created crop circles on the lawn.Attachment 273965
Beautiful job bud, beautiful.
Just had a real spanner thrown in the works. Took doggo for a walk the other day, she was running full tit and fell over herself on wet grass. Got up with a bit of a limp. Gave her a day to see if it settled down. Just been to the vets and it's a likely broken toe. FML. Got a mate with his gsp x gwp for her first opening so we have a doggo so to speak. Fingers and toes crossed the x ray tomorrow brings the clarity I'd like for her sake.
Four more sleeps. And fellas forgive me for I have sinned( why do all the naughty things feel so damn good?) fishing today and the shotgun came along just in case.mob of Canada's made mistake of letting me get close enough and managed to peel one out as they flew off.Attachment 274070 note the old retired black bitch making sure it couldn't get away lol
Three more sleeps. Fed out last bag of grain and lugged sack of decoys across sodden paddocks to maimai. Won't be driving anywhere near it in near future...the other sixty decoys will stay home..
Bad news on my front.
Doggo has broken a toe in the back right. She's out for this season.
Gutting is putting it mildly. Even though I know she would happily be there.
Doesn't take away from the excitement at all.
I’m dropping my number of decoys in the spread this year as well, looking to match what I usually see on the big lake,25-30 ducks in one area, not 80 like I have set in the past, more ripple decoys this year though.
It just won't be the same for us this year, we normally catch up for a few beers on the Friday night at the Waitotara pub but that won't be happening this year after last week's fire

Brother has pulled out. Leaves me to do all the hard yards with my daughter. Never mind it will make the ducks we shoot feel that much more rewarding.
Enjoy the father, daughter bonding time.our lass has kept me company for last few openings and I really enjoy her being there, doesn't shoot but having my adult daughter make the effort to come home is special.
well mate and i had planned to venture to our honey hole on trhe rakaia again this year but given the horrendous weather for next 24-48hrs across the south island ,Ive called it on safety grounds .I do not want to be stuck between raging fucking torrents of water expecting others to risk their lives for our stupidity for the sake of a duck .plus access tracks will be like driving through 1mof wet fresh cowshit ,just asking to get bogged .my shotty can have saturday on a/l at this a point but have suggested if fine sunday mate and i do a scoot and shoot round some of our lake possies. mind you just back from shopping and bugger me the landscaping around the housing on what was RNZAF Wigram air base has converted to might fine duck pond with more than a few plum ducks floating about .oh fora 12g suppresor and a few less bloody busybodies .
Bugger me old bean, that a tough break.good call. Two more sleeps and more water around than we've seen for a very long time.ducks everywhere.hopefully some still come to visit.
