These cooler mornings are starting to get me thinking about ducks! Soon as march hits those days always seem to disappear so quickly.
farm stags were going off at 04;00 this morning...was down to 6 degrees. less than two months now.
Need to buy some new decoys this year
Having a poke around the flats with the dog in North Canterbury plenty of birds tucked up under the willows. Say it every year and I'll say it again this year's going to be a good one :D, also have picked up a tidy wee 410 Bantam for the young fellas so that will be cool.
My duck pond is a tad low....lake opuha.we shoot on the island, well can drive onto it at the moment.....have seen it this low twice before in last 25 years but not this early.it is what it is.will ham it up n enjoy opening weekend anyway
Yep could do with some h2o that’s for sure fingers crossed
we normally sit in willows above my head and the bit Im standing on is under 5mtrs of water
that photo is looking out towards the one where Im standing with the dogs....its a bit to the left of screen...can just see water in distance over the green bit of bank
for scale...if you zoom right in,you can see our terrano on left hand side of that last picture. taken from on what is normally an island and facing back towards the west...almost looking at the north opuha/fox peak area
Marked up yesterday.......I get water twice a day for about 3 hrs each time......

Only problem this year is that its high tide at 6.53 am and when the tide drops I cant retrieve birds as the mud is waist deep.....Hopefully will have my limit before the water leaves and can get out of there and back to the bach.....otherwise I am stuck till the tide comes in....at 7pm!!!
You need sum snow shoes [emoji41]

Marked up today.Attachment 247520
Pegged on Thursday. Gave my 85 year old Beretta S2 it's pre season service this morning. I use falcon and eley bismuth in it. Choked full and half, it deals to duck parries and canadas no problem. Fit is perfect. Love the old thing. Ive had jabalu, brownings, mirokus and benellis but this old trooper tops them all. It was salvaged from a wrecked Italian truck by our troops in Libya WW2 and brought back to NZ. Must have been almost new at that time.

that sure is a quackup!!!! thanks for chuckle. 24 more sleeps
Went up n weed whacked verges of pond and put out a little feed today.will go back in a week n see if any customers have visited n put out more, always a balancing act to get feeding amounts right.
20 more sleeps
No shortage of water down here.
Except I'm shooting chicory paddocks for opening with no water nearby so I'll be back to old fashioned shot.
Plenty of birds around especially Parries so we will see how it plays out
FIFTEEN MORE SLEEPS
eleven more sleeps
11 sleepless nights and no rain on the forecast here in Sth Canterbury. How’s everyone’s water levels?? Should hopefully make those with water or river shooters like myself fair better.
Waiting for their brekkie this morning :)Attachment 248656
similar quantity of birds took off from pond today, four actually waited till we had parked all of 10mtrs away before lifting off LOL.
fed out more acorns and even half a bag of store bought duck feed!!!! bought two sacks today $20 a piece from temuka seed n grain...looks like a reasonable feed, will see if the ducks like it and stick around. dogs had good time romping around in pond stirring up the weed. life is good.
@Micky Duck Hey mate, I'm heading your way next weekend and I was wondering if you could spare a few hours first thing Saturday to help me move a mates couch down to Dunners? Say 6am on the 4th? appreciate it, cheers.
will check my dairy!!!!! hmmm something tells me I may be a little busy...if you can make it thursday or friday, yeah no problem LOL.
Many ducks in the air in the evenings lads ?
Not many seem to be moving in the evening here in the manawatu this year.
Be interested to see if the numbers are down in the region this year.
