Or am I the only one stupid enough to think it's a good idea. Just bought a Shimano Calcutta 401D and looking at suitable rod options to work lighter stickbaits, KY lures, etc with maybe 30lb braid

Not a dumb idea at all. Overheads are all I ever used to use for lure casting. The biggest disadvantage is controlling them, especially casting into wind. A birds nest can be REALLY frustrating when the fishing is hot. Worst when you are fishing light lures. Much nicer to use once you have hooked a fish though IMO.
Yeah I've been using a cheap compact bait cast reel for all my casting for the last 2 years (Abu Garcia Blackmax3) and come to strongly prefer overhead reels rather than spinning, even with the occasional birds nest. The Calcutta is supposed to have excellent cast control and I want to use it for river mouth KY and KY/Kingfish off the boat as well as probably a bit of slow jigging - but with a rod mainly focussed on casting/working top water lures. Looking at the 7'11" Shimano KAOS possibly although I'd really prefer something 6-7ft, it seems like casting heavier lures is quite uncommon with a bait caster in NZ, most of the overhead rods available are for stump-puller setups or various types of jigging which may be a either a bit stiff or too soft for casting
I decided I quite like lure fishing over using cut or live baits, it's a lot tidier.
Yeah. Much more active way of fishing.
Best rods for casting overheads have a relatively slow action so they accelerate the lure more evenly through the cast. Not sure what's on the market at the moment.
I use one (same rig) for Kahawai, snapper and salmon. I use braid and rarely get nests. Used to get them all the time but i spose you just get used to them.

I like Abu 7:1ohead and a jellytip or a 10or 15kg longish jigging / casting rod. A Penn 850 reel works ok too.
Do it!!! Let me know your cast weight and il make a little stick bait for ya.

Love em... although can be a challenge when an 8' shark gobbles your much smaller catch....
Consider a 9 ft surfcaster.
I use a Daiwa Alphas on a GLoomis GLX. and Calcutta 200 with PE 1.5 on a GLoomis GL3. And my Stella 4000 on a Majorcraft shore stick-bait rod. Depending which way you want to go - European/Jap/American/Taiwanese/Chinese rods and your budget, there are alot of options out there.
I would have upgraded my GLoomis to St Croix but I couldn't be bothered after getting distracted by other hobbies.
Whats the difference between a overhead rod and a spin rod?
Can you get that overhead with the handle on the correct side?
use a shimano tranx good for big kingis on stick baits the difference between a overhead rod and a spin rod the guides are on top for a overhead rod and underneath for a spin rod and you can get lefthanded reels
Use a baitcaster for murray cod as easy to control cast length when casting into snags or bank edges by feathering the spool with my thumb. Also easy to add some extra drag with my thumb
Jee wiz guys :) Get an Oirish rod and be done with it :) :) :)
Nek ting youl be arkin fr lef handerd loors :)
I just buy lefty baitcasters
Look at the Swedish-made Abu Garcia C3 series baitcasters, I have three of them. Pretty old school now, but you wouldn't believe the fish these tiny reels have caught! Available in left hand wind too. Some models are available in NZ, otherwise it's Amazon.

I have owned a couple of C3s and they do cast well but the drags are not up to the standard of the likes of the Calcutta when the heat goes on.
Is using an overhead setup for top water like using a 308 for long range? It must be similar...
I have done a lot of casting with overheads (was once a fanatical salmon surf fisherman). I have also fished with poppers and stickboats for GTs in the islands using spinning gear 6 or 7 times. While it is nice to use over head gear, in windy conditions with swell mixed in an eggbeater shines because lures that are not aerodynamic and/or front-weighted and are affected by and tumble in the wind in flight are a bugger to cast with an overhead particularly if you are in a rocking rolling boat. Also birds nests with braid can be a shit to unravel. Not saying it can't be done but if you go to serious popping/stick baiting forums you will see very few of the super keen guys using overheads, they almost exclusively use eyewateringly expensive japanese spinning rods and high end eggbeaters like Stellas.
The new thing now is very small stripper rings as it is less casting friction to just pull all that looping line in on the first ring instead of gradually over multiple rings dropping in size.
Old school vs new.

Always something new to catch the fisherman.
Carbontex washers will provide some oomph but sometimes you can find aftermarket drag upgrades to power-up the old girls instead which will be a more fundamental solution. But they are built for what they were meant for - Everyday fussfree fishing.
Leave the heavy duty stuff to the likes of the Antares, Metanium and Conquests if you are a Shimano fan.
Um nah I think you have that backwards. I know a f ton of topwater guys and only one used a overhead, He even sent it to Japan to have the handle reversed and geared so it nests less. hes back on the Saltigas now.
I cant think of 1 advantage an overhead would have to a spin set for casting....happy to hear some though.
