    Yes you are ment to except in an emergency which is the main reason rec boatys have one...in case of emergency.
    I have a commercial radio operators license but only as a result of my past employment....I considered getting a calsign when I bought my boat but couldnt think of any reason to spend another $350 bucks on something I dont need/wont use.

    I got one last year and it was much cheaper than that. However that is a handheld device that may be used on a number of small craft and more that one of those may be on the water at any given time.

    If the name/code has to be unique then how can you know that it is unique unless there is a central register held somewhere? I wonder how well this has been thought through and hence enforceable.
