MSA make the rules, and that is all vessel must have life jackets on board matching and fitting those on board. Councils have their own by laws ans are different from region to region, i.e. waikato all vessels under 6m under way and making way life jackets must be worn, not so for BOP where they don't have to be worn but must be on board. SUP Kayaks are vessels, the Only thing when a SUP is being surfed then no life jacket required. No brainer really. I wear a belt style PFD when paddling as I'm normally quite some distance from shore and I like to be safe and set an example to others. I also surf my sUP heaps and don't wear one then. When I fish by myself I always wear a PFD. In the past if you look at some of my posts I have been asked to recover those who wore no or badly suited PFD and paid a ultimate price.Name on boat makes itr a lot easier for those of us who have been tasked to rescue you or look for you, helps in stolen vessel recovery as well, also helps us to identify those who choose to not follow Maritime regulations.
