I like egg beaters big ones for the deep stuff its all about retrieve ratio back onto that reel - the big fixed spool have bigger handles and more retrieve ratio than many free spools - just easier to wind up from deep stuff - live baits or dead baits whole seem to be the way to go -deep hapuka fishiing I send down two baits - one 2-3 pilchards or similar baits on one hook or a livey or a big dead bait such as a mackerel if I have one - and the second hook a mix of kawahi squid pilchards in a big bait even a whole bonito head or kahawai head - seems to work
