I saw a commercial fishermen back 40 years ago on the Manukau Harbour dealing with rays in his flounder nets. He was grabbing the barb in his gloved hands, bending it forward over the rays back till it snapped off at the base, then grabbing it by the eye sockets, pulling them out of the net and throwing them over the side after stabbing them between the eyes with a knife. Almost got into a fight with the guy when I told him he was an arsehole...... Found out it was a common practice in those days later.....
While I am not surprised nowdays most commercial guys have quite a respect for everything they catch.....after all todays rubbish fish may be tomorrow's high value quota species.
