This has been going on for 6 months now, first showed in February, which towards the end of the spawn and like most we assumed it would pass however over the winter it has got a lot more prevalent.
Like I say have seen it a bit in the past but not for such an extended period and effecting so many fish.
Talking to some locals on the weekend and they say over 50% of the fish are still like this.
The flesh on these fish is very white, they are mushy when you fillet them and flakey. Has a slimy feel to it and the flesh goes off far more quickly than that of a normal fish. No one is keeping them as they are quite easy to identify when you land them as skinny and slimy.
Once again not too sure that cause as seems to be a lot of baitfish about, but it is unusual to have this many fish in such poor condition.
You know he's only gonna use them for flounder bait aye :D

Usually a few nice sea run trout lurking in those waters Joe.

Your right seen a few. Chasing bait right under our feet ..just won't take the Toby, bit of rain tonight may change water clour enough for us to trip em up.
try a whitebait type fly..tied about a meter up from your toby...two ways to do it. either tidy swivel and thread fly on above it,curve of hook towards main line so it tucks in....or have about 8" of line out to side, either a loop..not so flash of again tiny swivel and leave a long tag end..... beauty of this is it looks like toby is chasing the smelt/bait...you will have 50% hook ups on fly/spinner but be bloody careful when go to net fish as that other hook in net and fish not in and your in the shit...
Rain over night so a fresh in the river ....check
Up early to get the change of light ....check
Plenty of out going current so the bait will swim the sides of the river
Check.
Got a BIG bucket for all your catch ....check
Got black n gold Toby's....check
All our ducks in a row...check ....

Size 4 or 6 grey ghost wet fly will catch the hungry browns.
Ah Joe those zero baits make a very light meal when you whisk them up into a fritter. Ha ha ha ha. Keep at it mate.
