Thread: over head reel casting

ive brought are salmon rod with are daiwa sl20sh reel. is there any secret for castong are over head reel so i dont get birds nest im keen to try it on the surf caster any help would be great

Keep your thumb on the spool just enough so it still comes off, also there might be a screw on it you can tighten up so it doesn't unspool too fast.

On the inside of the left hand sideplate there is the centrifugal brake set . There is a brass ring on the side plate and a crosswise pin on the spools axle. You should have got a little plastic bag in the box with the brake blocks ( two red two white)

Ensure that both the inside of the brass ring and the blocks are clean of any grease or oil and fit the two red blocks one to each pin. The white blocks are used once you get the hang of these types of reels.
The blocks slide out to the ends of the pin when you spin the spool .The faster the spool spins the more they work.

You can also put a heavier oil into the bearings to slow it down more if needed.

Dont wind up the spool tension knob it should be set so the spool has just a hint of side to side play when in freespool. The bearings will last longer that way.

All thumb work, grab a lure take the hook of and prctice in your back yard at casting to objects in your yard Worked for me casting into snag's for barra.

Fished the surf at Rangitata for years before moving north.
Don't try and flick it like casting an eggbeater, more of a controlled lob. After a while you won't even think about it.
Also use "weight forward ticers and take off the swivel and tie directly to the slip ring, you will get more distance. I don't use braid either just the thinnest 25lb mono I could fine
2oz ticer and good rod and casts of 120m were quite easy. I can still do it now. Slide Baiting for snapper off tahuna beach. I use a 4oz Breakout sinker. Lob that as far as possible, wind line up tight and set the weight then use a clip on trace with 1/4oz sinker and 8/0 hook to slide down the line to sinker. Much easier than trying to cast sinker/baited hook combo and can fish way further out.
Once you get the hang of it you can take out all the brakes etc.
I do hate braid for surf fishing, One good overrun and you will know why!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wet the line on the spool to avoid being burnt by friction if you can't rest your thumb on the edge of the spool. This is also a good tip if you need additional pressure on a strong pulling fish & don't want to meet Burney again !

Once you get good you can take off all the brakes and aids, biggest thing is being smooth, the moment you jerk a cast you are in a world of birdsnests!
